Jobs moving overseas

There is a task in our organization to move US jobs to India. Three of our people are losing their jobs in January. Anyone else hearing the same?

Whoever decided to move IT support to India is a big id–t. Those folks are so useless I rather google stuff myself and fix it instead of calling them! They’re simply going to take forever then do nothing to help.

The Ford business service team in India have been quietly growing for the last 10-15 years. The massive new campus building that no one talks about holds 40,000 employees. All these positions have been relocated from NA / Eu. The H1 visas come over, learn the job, then set up the new department in India.

I heard 95% of IT operatiions will be moved overseas to low cost providers.

Welcome to 2020, work from home, hire cheap labor and keep them where they live.

Yes, the employer will pay the H-1B worker a wage which is no less than the wage paid to similarly qualified workers, but on the low scale. For example, let's say an IT System Admin salary varies between 60 to 100 K. The H1B visa holder gets paid 60K to replace a 100K American. The H1B visa holder is happy to get this salary and to migrate to US. However, after they become an US resident, they will ask for higher salary, and then they will get replaced by "fresh from the boat" H1B holders.

Another thing is that even with their University degrees, there are differences (culturally and technologically) that sometimes hamper their productivity. The H1B visa is a nice tool to bring some prepared people here, but has been abused to flood the American market with cheaper (not better) workforce.

If your org is just moving jobs to India in 2020, they are way late to that party.

I was part of an effort to tran support personnel over in India when I was in FCSD IT way back in 2007, right before the big purge in 2008........13 years ago!

Ah now do you not think that the special interests who crafted the H-1B Specialty Occupations verbiage with the intent of lowering wages is not capable of interpreting the verbiage as they see fit?
A relative of mine’s job was bringing over masses of H-1B workers to replace US workers. He held the position for 12 years. So I am familiar with the tactics and process. Two sad parts to the equation: the loss of US jobs -and- the squeeze on the H-1B as after they have been stateside for a few years the game was to replace them with cheaper freshers and then those older H1-B scramble to find new positions. These led to undesirable behaviors on the part of applicants for jobs and the employers.

The employer/agent will pay the H-1B worker a wage which is no less than the wage paid to similarly qualified workers or, if greater, the prevailing wage for the position in the geographic area in which the H-1B worker will be working.

There is no shortage of experienced engineering talent in the U.S.. It is simply that the foreign workers will accept a lower salary. Many H-1 B workers have average credentials and are doing mainstream routine work. There is a false narrative that H-1B workers have exceptional education or training and are doing industry-leading work which permanent residents or U.S. citizens are unable to perform.

Like NothingNew has said positions are filled in other countries (non-European, non-US). This has been happening in IT for a long time. UK, German and US positions evaporate and the positions are created in Ford of India.

They initially created a model where the app maintenance was done by Ford of India, and the app development was done by Ford UK/Germany/US. This was an epic failure and they then decided to recombine the app development and maintenance. Unfortunately by then they had lost nearly all the Ford UK/Germany/US app developers who had the app knowledge (layoffs). They have yet to recover from this epic failure. So of course the solution is to rewrite everything $$$$$.

The other epic failure was to move all the busy work type tasks to Ford of India. This despite the fact that nearly all these busy work type tasks could be automated. Presentations were made to management showing that all these tasks could be easily automated. So the busy work goes to Ford of India, who makes even more processes and busy work for a decade - and now Ford purchases software to capture keystrokes to automate the busy work- but you guessed it the software requires more people and more processes. Such a ShxxShow. All due to poor management.

Yes the lack of skilled US tech workers is a big fat lie. It is a wage suppression scheme that businesses use, just like shipping manufacturing to lower cost countries. Then when people in that lower cost region demand higher wage, the manufacturing is relocated to another region. The same is happening with white collar jobs as with blue collar jobs.

The Achilles heels of this business model are:
Who will buy your products and services? Unemployed/underemployed people will not.
What will happen in situations like a pandemic/war when you will have no way to make your product on US soil? We know the answer to that as we still are unable to buy many types of PPE. My DH Is nearly out of masks that he uses for his woodworking hobby, they are still difficult to come by.

Something needs to change.

H1b is a wage suppression tool, which is only reason employers love it. If all these hundreds of thousands of H1b Indians were not in US, our wages would have been much higher. This "IT shortage" is a lie.

Pd is moving cost estimating jobs to Mexico. The mex team is growing whilst the Dearborn team shrinks. My LL5 got a great retirement offer by offshoring jobs.

This has been going on for years in PD. Not able to hire US full time direct hire, but can get headcount in Mexico or India (Ford employees at least, but outside US).

Purchasing is moving approximately 44 jobs to Mexico. The people are supposedly being moved to other positions but you know it's all just setting up the dominos for cuts next year.
