Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Can't get myself to quit

I have been looking and interviewing and I even got a decent offer but here I am, still doing the same old job I hate for a manager I hate for the company I despise. I have no rational explanation for this. I guess I've just managed to convince myself that the devil I know is better than the one I don't. Being laid off would be great at this point.

@bhkc, you may be friends with a dictionary, but reading comprehension is obviously your archenemy.

Sorry, not a privilege from seniority by any definition of the words.

Dictionaries could and should become your friend.

Did you even read it the first time???
Such as the privilege of having more paid vacation days.
Not to mention other benefits such as pension accumulation, increased SUB pay, qualifying for retiree medical, etc.

Reread slowly. Where is the privilege?

@8eoa, thank you Noah Webster.
But your dictionary defines seniority as:
A privileged status attained by length of continuous service (as in a company)

Such as the privilege of having more paid vacation days.

I think that you are confusing years of service with seniority, two very different things.

Quitting and coming back with less vacation is because you have lost years of service, not losing seniority. If seniority applied to vacation it would be something like a longer term employee being able to choose a week of PTO which you wanted, and you could not do it. There are no rules like that whatsoever.

@7ake, ummm, many benefits at the bank are based on seniority. It's obvious that they are referring to vacation here.

What “seniority”? BNYM is not union and there is absolutely nothing based upon seniority. There are long time teams of good friends where managers, mostly lower level supervisors, give preferences to people based upon service time. But really also runs with friendship time. It’s best not to be on one of those teams

It’s only the dead weight who are left that are afraid to quit. Anll who are competent with current skill sets have and/or are leaving in droves for nice raises.

Maybe I am just not understanding! Why are BNY employees so afraid to quit? I know some people haven't updated their resume in decades? They're too scared to lose their seniority and go from 5 weeks down to just 2? Don't whine about how bad you hate working at a company and stay! You're wasting your lives because life is too f$$kn short! Get over it! It's not like there are no jobs because there are PLENTY. When I left there was no party and I did not expect one. They are a bunch of phonies. I am so glad I moved on. Just can't understand why there are so many wishy washy employees there. Make a personal goal to be out by a certain date and go.

Be certain about what you don't want to deal with and make sure those circumstances don't exist at the next place. Then make your move. It's not worth it to continue to be miserable. Move on.

NOTHING will change until YOU do. Get up off the floor and get in gear.

You're not doing yourself any favors. If you're that miserable, you better get brave and just do it. When they're ready to let you go, they won't think twice about it.
No one likes change. It's painful at time, but necessary.
I suggest you get bold, and do it.

As a recruiter friend once said to me: "It's easier to find a job when you have one".
Let that sink in.

I am not looking for a new opportunity at this moment, but will do soon and won't even look back after I give my notice and go through the notice period.

Yea… for some of us, based on location, BNYM is the best house on a bad block .
