It happens all the time. The next shift in the wind on which group is "offended" will see promotions or moves into specific job categories. I guarantee you that a far more qualified 50-something white male would be turned down from a position over a far less qualified person of color that could never do the job. I saw it happen far too many times in my career. All of them were not due to color of one's skin. It is what they knew about the person. Sleeping with a boss, knowing secrets about an exec, or many other things got them where they were. You sit and work with these people, see how little they do, and are constantly asked to help with their job. I told a woman no once. At the time I didn't realize she was the one that slept with an Exec and caused his divorce. 2 days later I get a call from an exec asking why I am not a team player. I wound up having to do her job, develop the presentation using her data, teach it all to her, and not have my name on it. Because she was so detached from reality, she had no clue what the data was and whether it was right. She took my name off the work, she presented it to the SLT, and the data was wrong. It caused such a massive downhill avalanche of brown stuff that management needed cases of Charmin to get off. I happily quit the company before she presented and laughed when I was called about it. I respectfully said I no longer work there and the data in the presentation was her data and they could look at the email chain to verify.
If you are responsible for data, understanding it, verifying accuracy, preparing it for Execs, and presenting to the SLT, you may want to verify said data. And who do you think got blamed for it? That's right me (no longer there) and her white manager. Not once was she even questioned on it and it was all hers. But, because of color and sleeping with a married Exec, she was teflon.
