There are a lot of talks in the media all over the place about quiet quitting...
Anyone quiet quitting at IBM?

Tough to Quiet Quit. Boss keeps distributing subsystems/modules/functional areas as folks leave. Just got 2 more added to the pile. And he says "others are keeping up - why not you".

Far more (well totally) unfair workload.

Quiet Quitting would be PiP and out wereas staying is hard work. So "contextual quiet quitting" is working hard enough to not PiP but no harder?

Planned early retirement is about two years and for a myriad of reasons I'd rather survive and retire from IBM in two. I'd rather not be PiPd and retire early due to market conditions and high draw years before SS kicks in.

I'm fine working hard as when hired and first few years - But I don't want to / can't work at the new level which is 2-3x work - whether or not the rest of the team is doing it.

So a bit of a tightrope .

IBM refuses to give raises, freezes backfills, and cancels promotions. This is called 'QUIET FIRING' and 'quiet quitting' is an appropriate response. Do you.

I quiet quit for a couple of years. Took a very lucrative contract role at the same time and even did IBM work work remotely from my contract role.

I got the idea from my boss at the time (functional boss, not line manager!) . He said loads of people were doing it.

"Quiet Quitting" is just the new term for "dogging it". It is nothing new. People have been "dogging it" at jobs since the concept of jobs was invented.

The "Band 9 Dilema" is the summation of all IBM compensation issues - namely promotions are the only way to get raises, bonuses, etc . This is compounded by the very limited number of band 10 positions and frequency of openings. Indeed recently a band 10 reporting to a front line was pulled to report to his VP. She considered Band 10 a VP resource. Making that even more rarified.

Yeah, I know, cry me a river, and, yeah, there's an equivalent ceiling (choke point, ...) at all tech companies - but other companies still generally provide COLA, profit and growth sharing, stock rewards - whereas IBM does not.

My team is mostly band 9s - and all work hard - read that again - all work hard - but I also know that half or more at this point will retire in 2-3 years. The younger ones are leaving in droves.

After no raises nor any comp/bonus for nearly all of the team for 6 years, it's avg 1.5% and "I know you're all at ~80 % of industry norms, but hang on, I'll get you caught up in 4-5 years"

So that the band 9 dilima.

“ Can't do less than zero!”

Yes you can. This is what I call working a second job while collecting the IBM paycheck doing nothing.

That has been working for me very well.
Thanks IBM.

Yes, doing it full time… just collecting a paycheck at this point and hoping I can make it to Dec 15 to get the match.

Quiet quitting is fantastic. If you are not doing it then you should consider it.

Most band 9s upwards have been quiet quitting for decades.
