I got RIFd in the class of Sept, 2017. I was 59 years old. I landed in a great spot after contracting for a year (at a 15% increase). I'm very happy it happened, now, at the time, not at all.

RIF'd in 2017 as well at age 50, was a Senior Manager w/ 20 years tenure. Took well over a 1.5 yrs to find an IC with much smaller company paying ~25% less. So depressing being interviewed by folks with little or know training and being passed over for 20 somethings. Recommendation to others: Don't stay at Oracle any longer than 5 years, no matter what. Leave then go back a year later if you want so you can get that raise, RSUs/Options/etc. You'll also do much better with a little Oracle on the resume than you will with a lot.

It cuts two ways....the look. Worse you scare the interviewing dictator because he knows you have more experience than him.
In retrospect it’s funny.
At the end of the day when your life ends, it doesn’t matter whether you were at Oracle or under the bridge.

That is great news! I'm not sure they employers are viewing older workers negatively as much because millennials are more insistent on work/life balance (and they should). The older generation work like dogs and are worth keeping in my view. Based on my experience, the younger workplace are more chaotic with audit issues and short cuts on processes whereas workplaces with older people tend to be more conservative with a clearer process in place. They've also seen more audit pains so they know to behave. Just different styles of management.

I'm the OP. I live in the SF Bay Area and I'm single. While I was unemployed, my elderly mother was diagnosed with cancer, along with her many other ailments and was hospitalized 8 times. So I was out of work, taking care of my mother, and living on savings, paying for COBRA. Going on management-level interviews in SF and being interviewed by 20-somethings, knowing it was a waste of my time. Did I get discouraged? Yes! I considered moving to a cheaper area but I had to care for my mother. I considered selling my house, putting everything in storage and couch-surfing for a while, but I didn't do it. I racked up some credit card debt which I'm working on paying off. Looking back, it was somewhat of a blessing that I wasn't working so I could take care of my mother. I started the new IC job 2 months before she died. It's during the hardest times that you find out how strong you are. And that life can be good even if your circumstances dramatically change. And that your true friends will be there for you. Or you can give up and k–l yourself. To each their own.

Same exact situation here. Laid off as a director at age 60; found an IC software engineer spot with a 37% pay cut, but with health insurance. Since I have saved well enough for retirement, it's all about maintaining health insurance and the salary, though smaller, means I will not have to start burning through savings yet. The job came to me through someone in my network and it only took 10 days. I am very grateful. Good luck to all.

Why be a slave for corporate world and have your well being dictated by another company. Work and invest your money in something so when the time comes, you can comfortably walk.

This is hope? 50% reduction in salary? 18 months to find a job. IC versus manager, I don't really care about but I could not live where I live on 50% and 18 months with no job would be impossible. I'd probably off myself.

Not if you are in sales support. When’s the last time you saw an SC over 55? Answer? Not today. When you interview, there’s a certain look you see, and you know what it means. Glad you found work though...
