Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Non Lay-off HR Communication?

What does a non-lay-off communication from HR look like? I assume if you’re not being let go and offered another position, you’ll also receive a meeting notification from HR/manager? Does it look exactly the same? Should I expect a heart-stopping meeting notification and wonder which way it’s going to go?

@6utt you obviously know a lot... can you tell us when the next round of layoffs are happening, as well as any additional information you can share as far as what levels / areas?

Typically HR isn't on the meeting invitation regardless of whether its a layoff or not. You will likely receive a short notice meeting notification from your direct manager or manager+1. If you already have an existing 1x1 scheduled with your manager then we will try to utilize that instead. HR schedules all of the conversations with leaders, so we have the schedule and the zoom link and just show-up where needed. This approach is intended to avoid panic, not be sneaky. Typically, we attend severance convos and promo convos, where our role is to explain the severance package or rewards/benefits provided with the promotion.

During the last re-org 3 years ago I was moved to a different team. My current manager communicated it to me. I had to reach out to my new manager to set up time to discuss my new role and coordinate my physical desk move. HR was not involved.

I went through three of these at Nike and never got an email or meeting invite to tell me that I was not being laid off. In fact, no one every really told me that things were "over". I was just left with a feeling of dread I couldn't shake and a bit of guilt.

My past experience with role change is that the manager or manager+skip talk to you about it. No HR rep in the meeting. That's just my own experience. I don't think having HR in a meeting necessarily means it's a layoff, though. You just have to wait until the meeting actually happens to know.

Nothing good ever comes from HR. I do not trust a single person in that org.
