High cost IT initiatives vs losing people in Permian

Why does XOM continue to fund IT projects that go nowhere fast but continue to let operations lose talented people?

Why does IT believe they should be paid the same as engineers and operators that are actually making money everyday?

This is a pretty dysfunctional group. The previous discipline manager was forced to retire a month ago, due to some Audit shenanigans. The replacement is an absolute fruitcake. Hopefully after EMIT takesover, things will get better.

Once again, just to be clear, there are no such titles in EMTEC referring to OT anything….that is a term used by IT folks that do not understand what process control is or what process control engineers do.

Yes, there are some SPEs in that group with absolutely zero site experience 🤣

Worse yet!There are EMTEC OT Senior Principal Engineers that haven't even worked in a manufacturing job.

But they say this makes them better because their superior judgement is not clouded by the reality of experience that comes with actually working.Their minds are free from the bias of facts and truth and can imagine solutions that have no technical limitations.

Those with experience and integrity would never aspire to be subjugated to the Senior Principal Engineer prison.

@8ukl

Ok Einstein, go look up the credentials of Senior Principal Engineers in EMTEC Automation & Process Control (ie. OT)

No such thing as an OT Senior Principal Engineer position. Get your facts straight

@7yxj

There are EMTEC OT Senior Principal Engineers with no engineering education or degree.

Only in ExxonMobil!
🤣

To the post:
“IT or OT? Either way, we don't speak engineer, you don't speak technology. Good tech people move on from this place eventually anyway, and paid more than engineers and operators :P”

This is incorrect, the folks you call “OT” are engineers if you refer to true systems and applications engineers, but I totally agree with you that IT folks do not speak engineer

I agree with the Ops engineer comment. All they do is reporting. I rarely see them bring forward a new idea. The wellwork program is on autopilot. What does this group do?

We need more IT out there so we don’t have 20 Ops Engineers sitting the in the office eating Shipleys and Chick-fil-a each morning while manually checking what their 50 CBP wells are doing yesterday, today. Prob should shift all that surveillance to India, as well. Get out of the office and go make these wells make more oil and leave the IT to IT (give us more money while you are at it!)

@1pic+1lGHHUQf you’re absolutely right - IT support of the base business is worth every penny. Too bad those were among the first pennies to be cut by the brilliant IT leaders.

What IT projects do you think are a waste? Certainly IT support of base business is worth every penny.

As an engineer in the Permian I have to say that the IT people are worth every penny. They have been hobbled by Houston. A couple of years ago they were awesome. Could fix anyting on the spot. Now they have to submit a ticket. I can't do my work as an engineer without good IT support.

You really believe that statement you just wrote? There is a business cost of doing any product. The shame of it all is you don’t put enough money into IT for quality smart compatible products. Instead people like you want patchwork work arounds. But wait Exxon doesn’t diversify products anyway so you be outsourced or PIPd soon.
