Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Why we are so bitter

Most of the younger employees can't figure out why so many of us old-timers are so angry and bitter all the time. Well, let me enlighten you. Unlike those who have been here for a few years and all they know is the XOM of today, we've been here for much longer. We remember what it's like to work for a company that provided you with great pay, excellent benefits, and job security. When you joined XOM, you knew you were set for life. Nobody even considered the option of not retiring from here. The culture was great and morale was high. How many of those things are true today? We are bitter and angry because we've known better, and we know this place can do better. And we are stuck with what we have now.

I appreciate the guidance, mentoring and wise advise of my older colleagues, who have seen much better days with the company. They don't compete with us and are generally frank and honest since they have nothing to lose. My teammates are back stabbers and brown nosers, trying to get ahead by all means.

Ask yourself this…how have I made money for my company today?

@ens When all else fails, attack the grammar. Your post wasn’t grammatically perfect either. Not that it matters.

And no, I don’t care why you old guys are bitter/cynical/whatever. Your feelings, your problem. I come to work for my paycheck and nothing else.

If you get bitter,
it will never get better,
so it's best to be a quitter,
instead of bed-wetter.

Maybe you should have wed better.

bro whut
i was replying to someone else

there are people in the company
right now
who don’t feel the resentment the rest of us do

who’ve drank the koolaid and cannot comprehend why people are feeling letdown

i have no idea why that’s a controversial observation

It's not bitterness that we feel.

It is being told that we have a job for life if we do XYZ for the company only to wake up one morning to realize that "we never had a job for life". It was just an illusion sold to us by the XOM recruiter when we first accepted our job for life.

Perhaps "anger" is a better word when an XOM manager/recruiter lies to you during an interview.

You mean you couldn’t care less?
Man, young people today are really just not all that smart.

@OP I always assumed that being bitter was just a part of getting old. It isn’t something I wonder about. I could care less about why some random old guy hates life. That’s his problem.

What on Earth does what the OP has written have to do with not comprehending that other companies and industries exist ?
And you’ve heard this many times, huh ? Keep hearing it, maybe eventually you’ll understand something, if the generic arrogance of your generation will allow it.

The reason older folks are bitter is because we have spent the long hours, call outs, turnarounds and time away from home necessary to help as much as we can. When you hit 52 then all employees that aren’t going to be the next ceo begin dropping in ranking and there is nothing that you can do about it. Stack on these masked layoffs and then it gets too much to handle. I was naive enough to think there’s no way I will ever be dropped in ranking because I work hard and do my best. Well guess what. It did happen to me and will happen to you if you are employed long enough. May the odds be forever in your favor.

Even before the push for green energy and the pandemic... Old timers were pretty much the same as they always been
