Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Summer Interns

Have seen interns all over campus. Just on my group 2. Every morning I see couple waiting to be pick up for first day of work.

If you are one of them…please don’t take an offer if you get it. There are much better opportunities than XOM

@OP+1gOqiwT0 : you are hilarious 😂. Instead of warning Interns away from horrible EM, why don’t you quit? Discuss layoff information on this board not your cowardice to move on from your position at EM. 2:1 jobs available. You can find one and immediately be happy 😆

Exxon used to be a good company to work for. Sure it had its fair share of bu-----t, but every corporation does. As a reward for living in less desirable areas, working more than you would most places, and being a prime candidate, they paid well and you had the promise of a long term career that you could retire from, with a pension, as long as you made it past that first 5 years. Now, all bets are off and it's just become another place to work. A few "prime candidates" will be attracted, but many are seeking better locations or industries with less political polarization.

DW destroyed all of that with one fell swoop in 2020 with an utter disrespect and disregard for the workforce while throwing away the 11 figure loss in 4Q20 to retain executive bonuses (while cutting benefits that the regular workforce rely on). As a result, there was a massive brain drain as many experienced people were forced to retire, laid off, PIPed, or left due to the new toxic culture. Senior management took the Boeing approach by replacing years of experience with cheap overseas labor that didn't have the institutional learning as an organization. You think Exxon ran mega projects like garbage before with overruns and delays? Wait until they try something in the next 5 years. The Development Planning group doesn't have anything decent or any idea about how to do their job and Global Projects will be crippled due to a lack of technical and project management knowledge.

Exxon is inevitably going to resort to being a finance company in the energy sector as they've systemically been making it more difficult to prove your worth by being very good at your job and demonstrating real business results, because ranking is a popularity contest. As DW himself put it, "if you don't like where you're assessed, you need to be better at playing the game". I won't be surprised if they eventually take the Conoco/P66 route with this new re-org of companies.

If you're an intern, you can always use Exxon to gain experience. The best time to find a job is when you already have a job, because you're less desperate.

Lol so your argument for working at EM is "Hey, it beats working a low level retail job."

Yeah ok, I guess it does in most cases, but let's be real- unless we're recruiting the bottom of the class these days, most interns can probably do better than EM.

I think people "whinge" a lot because EM used to be a pretty good place to work. Now it's just mediocre at best and gradually circling the drain.

Horrible post. There are also far worse companies to work for. Honeywell, for example.

Smaller oil companies. Walmart. Lowes.

Amazing how many people can whine and whinge about the company they work for. Leave if you don’t like it.
