Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Buyout, not riff

Buyout. No unemployment claims. No discrimination lawsuits. Improved morale for those who choose to stay.
But then, this is Verizon so…
Layoff. Unemployment claims across the board. Class action discrimination suits for each protected class (age, race, s-x). Fear and unrest for the employees not laid off.

It is always wise to check your individual state’s unemployment law. Took VSP in 2024 and my state since VZ labeled it a “voluntary” offer, I had left voluntarily. Therefore, no unemployment. But check your state’s law, you never know!

buyout means we loose expertise. Layoff means we can lose some underperformers

@OP There is only some truth to your post.

Buyout

  • some states do pay unemployment for voluntary separations, especially if you can prove that there is a fear of your job going away. I know several people who took the last VSP that got unemployment.
  • Where is the improved moral after the last VSP? Most people had to pick up even more work when positions were not backfilled.

RIF

  • class action discrimination suits - never happens. Might get the odd individual who tries, but the company (and legal) knows what it's doing and there aren't many lawyers who would take it on. Plus you give up your severance in the "hope" of getting a settlement (with a nice chunk to the lawyers). Better to take the severance and run.

"some" higher ups get inside information on when a VSP was coming down so delayed their "retirement" a few months for the big cash bonus.
Ask me how I know

VZ. Has seen it all.. that’s why they have stacks of lawyers who work with big law firms….
They are in the business of getting out of jail free. Ethics? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@OP “Class action discrimination suits for each protected class.”

I’ve already heard from a lawyer. They’re already getting the paperwork started.

VZ has RIF down to a science. No need for extra time and cost with buyout.
