Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

No references can be given

I worked for Dell for 20 years and I was told that I can't recieve references from management or co workers. Nor can active Dell employees contact me post layoff. Has this happened to others?

My last manager and senior manager helped me get a job. And they gave good references.

If they are willing they will. If they are not then you have to ask yourself why.

Be careful what you put out into the world…

@OP on a human level, that’s pretty sh*tty for your long time colleagues to follow a ‘policy’ or ‘practice’ by corporation over human decency.

@OP I’ve been a reference to people who left or were laid off from Dell.

Honestly, how many people are left at the company after this long that would be able to give you a reference?

Happened to me with a former manager from a couple of roles ago. Really lowered my opinion of him.

This is the overall company policy, but there are some countries where it's possible. I'm guessing there's some sort of local agreements/legislation that makes it overrules the company policy. I know people that have gotten official letters of recommendation, while for others it has been a firm no, so depending on where you are, check with HR what's possible or not.

I have personal references and had no problem getting a job. I actually was able to recruit other Dell friends to my new job!! You sure don’t need managers or leadership at Dell when your there and sure as he-l don’t need them when your gone..

I wouldn't want anyone knowing I worked at Dell. Other companies know Dell employees are far behind. It's a major hit on your resume.

@OP

I'm ok with that. Cause I sure as he-l wouldn't give Dell a positive reference.

This is normal for most organizations. Saying the bare minimum insulates them from potential litigation.

That has been Dell's policy for at least 26 years. They will only verify dates of employment and whether you're eligible for rehire.

When I joined EMC they asked for references. The company that I worked for would only provide generic HR references, staff were not allowed to provide them. Amusingly, even though EMC would not allow my manager to issue a reference to another company when i left, they insisted on one from my manager before i joined.

That is correct. HR will not allow management to provide references on work history or letters of recommendation. Nothing personal, policy to protect dell.
