Selling central offices??

Someone posted on here about VZ selling central office and scrapping the metal.

I thought we couldn't sell the COs bc that's literally where our equipment is housed and some have collocated equipment from other carriers, or used to. I feel super confused

Verizon has said that they will sell any central office if the price is right and they will move the traffic to another CO location. After they sell the valuable Real Estate, they will scrap the copper and make additional money. This is not a rumor. It’s a fact. Google it.

@a9 , great point. ”I hear…”, such an innocuous statement, until you think about what Chase Hughes has to say about elicitation. See ALL the replies from folks who are willing to violate NDA’s to “correct the record”.

@a4 that might be true, I don’t know why they wouldn’t build out Fios in those areas. Thats the only way they’re getting customers back.

@az verizon nj doesn't lease any c.o's. At least not Yet I should say. But are now actively selling some off . And copper mining the cable is a top priority now. The company wants the copper cable gone

Verizon sells the building and then does a long term lease for the space needed for the vz equipment and colo cages

@aq uh no, i didn't mean shutting down. I stated what someone else posted on here and asked for clarification, which was selling COs. Others have already posted extremely helpful info to help understand

yes they have already collapsed a few central offices in Delaware.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruled that telecom providers are no longer obligated to service outdated copper wires or maintain parallel networks. Verizon is legally allowed to discontinue offering older copper services. If your local exchange is targeted, you must upgrade or find a new provider. So we kicking customers to the curbs and in a nut shell theres no copper leaving the co.

In the old days when these offices were built we were providing copper services to customers. Copper had a maximum transmission distance of 3 miles. That meant we needed a CO or CEV somewhere within 3 miles of every customer with equipment to service them. This led to them building small COs in rural areas just to service a few hundred customers.

Fiber optics can transmit data around 100 miles without needing a repeater. So the recipe for selling a CO is to migrate everyone onto fiber services coming out of a further CO, then harvest the copper, shut the equipment down and sell it.

Hope this helps
