A better work culture

Imagine a work culture at XOM where everyone feels empowered, and bullying or backstabbing is shut down without a second thought. A place where fresh ideas are welcomed, no matter who they come from. In essence, the exact opposite of what we’re dealing with right now. Wouldn't that be great?

I just moved to CVX and they are so obsessed with beating XOM that their culture has changed pretty significantly the past 2-3 years. It’s a pretty sorry place to work. I wanna come back.

@3wmg I think it’s great that you found a place where you fit in and you can do your best work. I also think you could have made your point without the ad hominem attacks.

I personally don’t see “night and day” differences between large O&G companies or their working cultures. There’s small differences out on the margins that could mean a lot to certain people, but at bottom it’s the same petty toxicity and nepotism pretty much everywhere.

What a naive and insular view. Not every O&G company has a dog**** culture like EM. I moved to another supermajor and it's night and day difference. I'm sure the disparity between EM and a highly-functioning independent E&P would be even more stark.

  1. This is how every oil and gas company is run. Some a little better than others, but not all that different.
  1. The main reasons for all of the bullying, backstabbing, petty games, etc., is that most of you usurp generous salaries, face few real life challenges, have very little to do, and thus concoct pointless escapades that you at one use to amuse yourselves and also constantly complain about.

Most of the problems posted here are easily solved by moving on or avoiding the artificially manufactured drama, neither of which is difficult for a functioning adult to do.

The culture is exactly what management wants. EM was designed to be run top-down with an iron fist.

Some people are needed just carry out the process and don’t matter that much. You can either accept your lot and not meaningfully advance and get only a pittance for salary treatment, or leave. Frankly, if you don’t leave that is an admission that EM’s assessment process correctly identified you as a low relative performer or a good enough corporate drone.

20% of the people account for 80% of the results. Eventually, that other 80% of people will be in Indian or some other low cost country.

It seems that EM is trying to NSI every HC10 that makes corrections to all the work products from Bangalore id--ts that are higher ranked.

When all the old HC10 staff are gone, Bangalore mistakes will go unchecked and the few remaining ignorant sponsored HC10 HiPos will not realize the errors until there is a Valdez level event.

Head count is still too high for our target global OPEX. With President elect Trump's "Drill Baby Drill" mandate, we will need to accelerate our headcount reduction since the price of global crude and natural gas will drop even further.

Welcome to a new reality if crude prices drop to under $60 per barrel. According to laswt years Investors Day meeting, our long-term target for "cost to produce" is under $35 per barrel.

The toxic culture is a tactic to achieve HC10 headcount reduction goal. It's working but you guys are not quitting fast enough as executives wanted. XOM is still too fat as a commodity company

Forced ranking cannot be applied fairly in EM because even the lowest ranked person in Spring outperforms most higher ranked person in Bangalore.

The built-in bias in ranking has the person in Spring making corrections to BTC deliverables ranked as NSI (over 50) while the BTC engineer making the mistakes gets Outstanding.

Starting with 10 excellent employees and keeping 3 due to a system that alienates the other only 7 hurts the corporation. The rank system works inside a vacuum where the replacement level employee in the open market is higher than the employee being pushed out. But at Exxon, that’s hardly the case anymore. Exxon is gifting its competitors and other industries with outstanding people. My suggestion to anyone unhappy or contemplating moving, to do so, if you have a compelling offer. I’ve found that in a way, Exxon gave me the courage to try something new. Had I not been given a signal to leave, I never would have done so. I honestly can’t imagine a life unlike the one I have today where I am happy and growing.

A place where a team of 10 excellent employees are not force ranked from 1 to 10 which enables a work culture that all 10 employees help each other be successful instead of having to be backstabbing competitors to try to avoid being the NSI sacrifice.

Exxon people have no idea how good a culture like that can be so successful.
