Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

Did anyone else see this on Facebook?

SAS is having an event for retirees, weeks after the company-wide celebration, to which we were not invited. Much of the success of SAS is due to the great work of retirees. If we come to said event, we have to pay for our own lunch! Seriously!?! We get to listen to stuff about the latest stuff that ki-led the goose that laid the golden egg, and after all we did, they won't even spring for lunch for us?!? In contrast, there is a mid-October event, independent of SAS, for retirees. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2885607674835420/posts/27527959706840208 I think I will attend the latter. Hope to see you there. I'm sure SAS only cares about the present and the unfortunately bleak future, but shouldn't they have some respect for those that contributed to their early success?

Aww don't be butthurt about the incompetence remark. Would uselessness be more accurate? Obsolescence maybe?

Yeah those who got offered a buyout along with the masses probably were not incompetent. but a lot of those picked off since and told to retire, and there are many, were. let's bring that back.

@OP You need to read the FB post again, this time more slowly.

The event to which SAS retirees have been invited runs from 1-3pm. Ice cream will be served. It's an afternoon socializing event. The post goes on to mention that IF you attend the event, you MIGHT enjoy having lunch in one of the cafes, which are now located only in A, C, and R. As a retiree, you might recall that there used to be cafes in F and T, so this is helpful planning information. The post suggests that you might want to arrange to have lunch with former colleagues who are still working in Cary.

I don't see anything cheap or nefarious about any of this. Go to the event if you want to go to the event. Or stay home and fume. Find someone to have lunch with beforehand if you want to do so. If you don't it's fine. Settle down. There are many things to be legitimately upset about. This is not one of them.

I know a few people who were forcibly retired, but none due to incompetence. On the contrary, incompetence has long been tolerated at SAS; that's a source of its problems.

As @a1 says, our contributions were bought and paid for. We took the deal, and it was considered a good deal at the time. SAS does not owe us a free lunch.

For the 50th anniversary, it would have been gracious to invite all the retirees. The only ones I know who were invited were high managers -- and they would agree that others made greater contributions.

I'm not on Facebook, but I've been to other retiree gatherings at SAS. In large groups, whom you'll sit with is unpredictable. But there are usually a few people you know, and it's good to see old friends.

Sounds like a bunch of retirees having their own party for themselves no? That's different than SAS having a party for them.

The "retirees" I know were mostly forcibly retired due to incompetence, so there's that. It's really awesome for morale knowing these jokers got an extra year of salary way out when they were let go for not performing.

No. That success was bought and paid for.
