Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Why aren’t more HC10 employees leaving XOM

Serious question - why aren’t more people from High Cost 10 countries resigning when EM will force you out in the next few years as they outsource to lower cost countries? Just trying to understand the thought process

OP, do you work at Exxon? If you did you'd know the answer. But, let me tell it to you in plain English: "BECAUSE THERE IS ALMOST NOBODY LEFT" Have you been to Annandale recently? It is a dead place. Nobody there. Have you been to the HC recently? Nobody there. The situation at the HC is so bad that about ten of the fifteen buildings are literally empty. Have you been to any of the chemical plants or refineries in the US recently? They are running on a fraction of the people they had before covid. Have you been to ETC recently? Totally empty. There are very few people left in the HC10 countries so, obviously, there are a lot fewer people leaving. GET THIS IN YOUR HEAD: THERE IS NOBODY LEFT HERE, JUST THE BRAINDEAD ZOMBIES OF THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. Good luck to you all.

I saw multiple mid to high ranked coworkers shown the door in the 2020 layoff. Not PIP’d , just shown the door because they were not deemed a “fit”.
So not only does the annual hunger games of PDS play a role, anyone is also at risk for a layoff as deemed necessary.
We all need to remember that the overall employee count goal is sub 50k, this number will be achieved by any means necessary (except a reasonable incentive package). Keep your resumes current and never stop looking.

The company can turn on a dime and PIP you one year to the next. Why why should I feel any loyalty to this company? Once I hit the five year mark, it's free agency.

In Canada here. I’ll be 55 in a few months and planning to coast, do minimal work and not stress until I get walked out with severance and pension.
No issues getting a new job after. The competition out there is an alphabet soup spelled names. It is hard to get good help in Canada.
I feel bad for those in their later 30’s. They have tougher decisions to make.

I'm definitely looking at jumping out at some point, but for now have a decent salary and a decent job. So not in a rush to leave immediately. I agree the future looks bleak for hc10 so it's probably wise to line up alternatives. Honestly I think when a critical mass of work ends up in TCs that's probably the moment EM really goes down the drain we've been circling unless the work quality out of the low cost shops improves dramatically. Either way no place to spend one's whole career anymore.

Speaking for myself, I like my role and am unsure what the economic environment will look like in the near future for the states (another economic disaster?) I agree there is not a long term future here for me, but I am trying to feel out this next year or so before I jump ship.

@OP

Probably because many jobs can’t be outsourced, and in civilized industrial countries (not the US), workers have strong legal protections and unions that prevent the worst abuses of companies like Exxon.

Look at the bright side: at least in America you’ll always have your “freedom”.

I enjoy working in the oil and gas industry and don't see any other company in the sector that is a better option. That is why I stay.

I am qualified to go work in tech, but it doesn't interest me as much.

How can pension be a chain when you can be PIPd or laid off at any time.

Pension is the chain which is not letting us go.

@kzq Hlad your racist bu-t left. Why should the company pay 5 or 6 times as much for weak, entitled id--ts, when there qualified employees elsewhere?

Agree. XOM will continue to sub to tu-d world countries. I saw the writing on the wall and got out in 2021after joining XOM out of school and working there five years. No need to waste any time at XOM but it was good on my resume.
