Thread regarding IBM layoffs

New IBM email fiasco?

I am a retired IBMer since a few years. I now understand that IBM is leaving Notes for MS Outlook? When I worked in IBM it was key to find old mails to understand prior meeting minutes, what was agreed within IBM and with clients, BPs, ... Working with clients it was a compliance issue if I could not document old client agreements and conversations. I also used my Notes log to find people names, emails addresses and a bunch more.

What are the plans to ensure this goldmine of information is not lost? Please can someone with insight knowledge enlighten me?

Of course this happens right after I leave. I wonder how much more productive I could have been each day without Notes hanging, crashing, and completely crippling my workstation several times per day. Probably would have increased my sales by 50%/half.

Seriously, to think that a global company with hundreds of thousands of employees, used this 90s era POS as its enterprise email and productivity solution until 2022 is beyond me.

Anyway, good riddance Notes. You may now take your rightful place in the graveyard of enterprise software and custom builds that Blue held onto for way too long – WWER, Sugar, OTR, Sametime, Symphony, Connections, etc.

Before I left IBM I sent any email that I thought was important and my team might need I sent it to the person(s) who would need them. After sending out the copies I then deleted all emails. When I left my email was empty.

Former (RA'd) IBMer here...Just wondering - Does your manager get access to your email once you are officially gone? I would not be surprised since they could say a customer or some such may be emailing you?

Since I am retiring this year and asked, I can answer this question (spelling issues fixed):
What does IBM do with employees emails since they're laid off? Anyone know?

Within 1 week of the IBMer retiring or leaving the company, their LOTUS userid and ALL LOTUS NOTES EMAIL is deleted. Anything in LOTUS databases do not "belong" to a specific individual so they stay but the "owner/editor" function should be transferred to someone staying at IBM so they can grant new team members access/etc. I would assume the same treatment for OUTLOOK email.

The OP is right this could be a challenge. I kept separate folders for each client as some technical issues could drag on for months (availability, performance, data loss...) with many players involved. This reminds me of trying to fit salesforce in order to replace RETAIN. It was a real mess. Square pegs in round holes.

It's a careful ballance between losing all emails by changing email systems every few months and avoiding those pesky lawsuits

Those that were using the Notes client on their workstation with replication will have that replica there as long as they want.

Everyone else has that used Notes / Verse will still have their old mail available for the next 6 months with yet to be revealed plans to move some old mail into Exchange.

Other Notes data bases will remain for the foreseeable future.

I expect people with complex calendars are feeling some pain because the calendars were not copied. Me, I'm fine. Don't have very many meetings.

How else will IBM get rid of all the incriminating emails that are being used in the age discrimination lawsuits? Not a "fiasco" at all for IBM. At least not the executives.

The "gold mine" will only last 6 months, then everything goes away. IBMers are free to forward old e-mails though.
