Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Is it still possible to build a career here?

A long-timer here. Back when we started we looked at Dell as a place in which we could build a good career ( and a lot of us succeeded ). Now I don’t see that enthusiasm about staying here long-term. Are younger folks that much in a different mindset than we used to be or has this place really sunk so low that younger people see it just as a temporary stop in their career path?

@azvo+1bk9FnXS I completely agree with your comment about the lack of innovation. That is the reason they continue to see market share slip to the cloud.

Project Apex was a response that came out 2-3 years too late. Typical Dell move right there.

I joined dell not so long ago... When i started i had ambitions, expectations of new thrilling projects and environment... Now i just realize that this is a cr---y company run by old dogs with dementia that are going to do whatever is necessary to cut expenses and get a promotion, or pay increase.

Company with 0 innovation, so why would i want to stay here long term, Its just a golden eggs chicken waiting to die out. Not just my opinion... some other folks feel similar...

The company is refusing to send us back to the office even though many of us want to go back to the actual office in our own team setting like normal. Because the company is now thinking about themselves and the cost savings of having people work from home as opposed to their employees, I'll continue to build my career working 4 hours a day at home, maybe less on Fridays.

It's funny how it's always a "family" until they need to send grandma on a floating piece of ice to her destiny. I agree with a previous responder: the best place to build a career is by changing jobs and always looking for new opportunities. Loyalty is never rewarded.

But the thing that pi---s me off the most about Dell and their lack of honesty. Everything is always great, every manager is always "never been more excited about the future", quarterly results are always amazing (even when we grow a fraction of what the competition did), and then everyone is surprised when the layoffs arrive. The time to polish your resume is always now.

Terrible place of work. I was very happy to be laid off last September. They do target older, more experienced ( higher salary) employees for such things

Follow the money, not the culture.
The math shows you make far more money changing companies every 18-24 months. Period.

It doesn't matter if Dell wants to be a place to build a career or not. People who actually want to achieve better wages and benefits are far better off looking for a new role at a new company each time, rather than hoping for a raise or promotion internally.

Going to a new company almost ALWAYS pays more than a promotion at year 2 or 3 and pays a LOT more than Dell's typical cost of living increases... why should anyone ever stay at one company anymore unless there is a huge stock incentive at risk? Dell is hardly a growth stock in tech either.

You reap what you sow. The youngun's see the long-timers get kicked by the wayside out of convenience and make their minds up about where they want to work. Why commit to a company that doesn't commit to their veterans?
