Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

No Contract Extension

So for now a contract extension doesn’t look probable. Rumor has it there’s 2 main roadblocks in the way. One, the company has proposed a big increase for medical insurance for retirees that haven’t reached the Medicare Eligible age of 65. Potentially increasing premiums to an amount that’s staggering for those on a retirement income. Secondly the Union is trying to negotiate a pension benefit for those in the 2nd tier hired after 2012. That’s a major give back and it seems extremely unlikely the company would reverse course on a big ticket item like that. One of the NY locals recently sent this via text to their members:

In late May, CWA, IBEW, and Verizon began negotiations to determine whether an agreement could be reached to extend the current collective bargaining agreements. By late June, significant differences remained between the parties' proposals, and the Unions informed the Company of our intention to conclude negotiations. At the Company's request, a high-level meeting was held, during which the Unions agreed to continue discussions, with the understanding that the Company was prepared to more fully address the Unions' concerns. Despite these continued efforts, the Company has not adequately responded to the needs and priorities of our members. Instead, the Company has chosen to end the bargaining process.

Sounds to me like both Union and the Company left the bargaining table, each at different times. To the new employees without a pension, I wish it were that easy to win that for you. Many of us look at that 2012 contract and still cringe at what was lost. Best you might hope for is a bigger company match on the 401K. The 2nd tier was proposed by the Company not just to cut costs, but to make a strike less effective down the road. The legacy employees have more to lose and once it’s a bigger ratio of new hires to legacy employees, no new hire is going to vote for a strike, much less picket for something they will most likely never get.

@pb interesting. You can play the odds and get a high deductible plan. With major medical. Maybe bank $5000 per year into your hsa. It rolls over year to year too. The cheaper the plan the more in your hsa. Theoretically you can build up 20/25000 over 5 years in your hsa before switching back to a better plan

Interestingly you can take the companies portion of what the cap is and shop for insurance yourself on the open market and get your own plan.

I also believe that if you find a cheaper plan you get the difference back in a HSA account to use toward medical expenses and that amount can be rolled over year to year

The newer guys accepted the job knowing what they signed up for. I don’t think they’re getting the pension back, Vz wants out of that. They should definitely get them a better 401 deal. I think we’re all paying a lot for medical now, can’t allow increases.
Lump wont go away either. They’re happy to be rid of us.

I agree it is to get rid of future financial burdens, but they have also been getting rid of the pension obligation to insurance companies. Either way, they want out of future payments

@h1 It’s very unlikely that the lump sum option is ever going away if you take a moment to consider why it’s offered in the first place. Companies aren’t doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. They do it to reduce their future financial burden of funding it. It’s rumored to be contractual in Vz’s case. When someone finds the page number and paragraph in the contract that specifically pertains to a lump sum option, kindly post that info.

All I need to know is, the Union has sold us out time and time again, and now the members turn to fight back. Think about the ego these officials have, “you guys have a great sick plan, we negotiated it “ and “we negotiated a great medical plan”, and the most insane “you guys didn’t need 12 weeks FMLA paid off”… that’s what the dues have paid for…

One rumor I heard yesterday was Fidelity is advising VZ to get rid of the cash out option for our pensions. Anyone out there hear anything related to this.

Hilarious. I guess you are a splicer sitting in a cube all day because you guys are the ones that think you are irreplaceable, maybe having to knock out a fiber splice here and there. Other times just maybe sleeping or ba----g a wh--e in the truck. Your job ain’t that hard

Pretty sure while I hope for the best that most of us will unfortunately be hear beyond retiree benefits age !!!!!I in no way wanna sell out the current retirees but that door never should have been open without caps on the over the cap spent by company it’s open now .I would say mitigate the highest cost with a cap for retiree costs and negotiate a very nice raise for all !!!Then as to the new guys get them an even better 401k.But we gave back way too much in the past now we are seeing the long game by the company the extensions have only been to wait out the older guys to weaken the union strike to create the new and old divide

@d5 yes anyone hired after 2012 has no pension, but if you were hired b4 or after 2012 the retiree medical affects everyone. At this point they should fight for a better 401k for 2012s and holding down medical premiums.

Looks like the companys plan is to divide the new and old employees, pretty obvious by the issues they're focusing on.

What kind of union strength do you have when millions of Americans are out of work, and almost anyone off the street can do your job?

The Union is just laying the ground work for “you’re lucky to have a job” victory speech. The Union will get rolled, and the members, most of them, like sheep will vote yes to losing more . Ask yourself, what have the Union officials lost after negotiating giving back so many things we once had? They get double salaries, their friends are on the payroll, the membership has shrunk drastically and they still aren’t out in the field working … wake up, demand they fight for gains! We have a huge strike fund, let’s use it along with unemployment, stay out till we get a fair contract!!! #fightforallmembers!!! No give backs, all gains !

WFH, did call center employees in. There felt there were gifted a good situation, but it actually hurt them in the long run. Now there can be a strike without any situations. Do you really think people will come out of there house for a strike? Say goodbye .

I don't care about anyone hired after 02-03, let alone 12. Newbies shouldn't get a pension anyway, this isn't Bell South, 1989.. in 2025 you're just lucky to have work.

They ain’t gettin a pension now, just up the 401 contribution. Retiree medical definitely gonna go up, they don’t have much bargaining power on this. Just my thoughts
