Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Is it upstream's fault?

I have 20 odd years of experience in designing, operating and optimising downstream facilities.
The idea that you can offshore the engineering support that keeps these highly complex, old units running safely is baffling to me.
Has someone manager seen the upstream, with more remote support, and thought "we can do that in downstream"?

@ga+1jy28yqmy Totally, America also needs to increase it's standards to match those of Europe.

@bc. Solomon numbers don’t account for the cost of environmental, safety and work conditions that US refineries need to include in their organization and cost structure. Free trade should be fair trade.

@bc

  1. It's not humanity's greatest feat to build a new refinery that is more efficient than one is 60 years old.
  2. Are their technical support remote?
  3. I can't believe I'm debating with someone who'd use Solomon in their argument

@bc that refinery also operates with the caste system in place where they chunk the dead bodies of the laborers over into the river and pay their families $3k compensation. They also have priest in their control room burning incense and for a long time had zoo animals inside owned by the owner and tu-d piles everywhere because the laborers p-o anywhere and licensed most of their units from big O&G companies where Americans helped them get it running. Maybe sit this one out.

India operates the largest refinery in the world, which beats us in Solomon benchmarking. India has more talent managing refineries than US. They lack Upstream talent but Refining and Chemicals is plentiful. Don’t think you can fight the desire to port your work. Upskill or move to another place.

Of course they can, because you are going to work your ar-e off to fix all the incoming mistakes. The three layers of management above you will ensure that those at the top never hear of your struggles.
