Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

Base business

I do truly feel the company needs a reset to focus on base business. Culture needs to stop where ladder climbing is promoted. We are here to make oil, gas and refined products. Supporting functions should be lean and follow the rest of industry standard. As much as I hate to say it, Jon is right. We need a competitive business. This is the only way, if we don’t change our act Cenovus will be acquired and that’s when the real layoffs will happen.

Toledo/BP has a long-standing practice of friends and family being hired by “X Engineering” firm in some role they don’t really have/need and paying them absurd amounts of money. Roles inc “misc engineer” “buyer” “cost controller” “admin” it’s laughable the number of heads is so absurd. These people hop from one to the next and their HR relatives and friends guide them. This predates CVE owning the site as I’ve seen it for at least 15 years. Oh and I know they bill overtime but they weren’t on site more then 20 hours. How d-mb is the leadership unless they are getting something out of this? Kickback? Everyone is replaceable. No one should be extorting a company for absurdly high billing rates to do administrative tasks. Who is protecting this ? $170 USD hr to schedule meeting and order supplies ??? Investigate please.

@bz+1jqx0xtwg Not fake news at all. I know several people at Tourmaline and can confirm they do not have an HR department or HR reps. They use managers for interviewing and they use legal for hiring. They also don’t add multiple layers of middle management just for the heck of it to promote their buddies only to have to sever them all 2 years later. They have a strategy and they don’t divert from it. Ever.
They are a top tier liquids-rich gas producer and they make their shareholders boat loads of money.

@dd+1jqx0xtwg You mean they’re cutting exec’s or a specific team?

A little birdie told me (AP) that big cuts are coming from the top..... I'd get your resume cleaned up if I were on one of those teams.....

I’d love to see the numbers on how and where HR generates value and cash-flow to justify their massive number of employees! Even after their laughable “streamlining” exercise yesterday, they have 7 Directors!
SEVEN DIRECTORS!!! In HR! WTAF?

Thats unbelievably stupid, man. You know there is an HR analytics team, right? They could figure this out in a minute if Jon asked them to. Normally when you tell someone to protect their di-k, you don't hear them say "stfu one time I pi---d on electric fence and nothing happened". Clown.

For the record, I have watched po-n on office laptop and nothing happened, so stop scaring us to become a slave, nothing wrong in sharing basic workforce data

Dude pulling charts from workday and publishing stats as well as the date he got it is going to get his a-s canned. You can't do that with company info and not expect to get into trouble. There will be logs somewhere...

Digital fingerprints, people! Cenovus knows every website you go to while you're on a corporate device or phone, or when you're on a personal device connected to the cenovus wifi. This site included.

I've worked with people in HR and found them both competent and helpful. I don't really know what they do exactly but that doesn't mean it isn't important. It's an underappreciated support function. I think your outrage is misguided. And you're probably going to get canned for it.

I hope that someone with true ability to impact change reads this and reads it closely.

There are 12,723 people on the workday org chart pulled from April 2, 2025. From the very top, right down to a person swinging a wrench in the cold. Every person, every location.

Of 12,723 total staff/contractors, there are 5,301 contractors (42%) and 7,422 employees (58%).

Of 7,422 total staffed employees, there are 2,601 in Calgary, 1,155 in Lloyd, 709 in Lima, 640 Toledo, 410 in Christina, 401 in Foster, 281 in Superior, 267 in St Johns, 152 in Sunrise, 131 in Shekou, 115 in Columbus, and 560 across all other locations.

Of 5,301 total contractors, there are 1,856 in Calgary, 516 in Lloyd, 497 in Toledo, 442 in Foster Creek, 376 in Christina Lake, 364 in St Johns, 349 in Lima, 190 in Sunrise, and 711 across all other locations.

Of 4,457 Calgary staff, there is 58% employees and 42% contractors.

Of 4,457 Calgary workers, there are 279 HR staff (6%).
Of 1,671 Lloyd workers, there are 33 HR staff (2%).
Of 843 Foster workers, there are 52 HR staff (6%).
Of 786 Christina Lake staff, there are 52 HR staff (7%).
Of 4,966 remaining staff, there are 49 HR staff (0.01%).

How can anyone wonder where there are areas to reduce costs, but more importantly, bullsh-t.

What is the employee headcount currently? Where do you find this information?

Nothing they do matters as long as downstream keeps losing so much money. It needs to be spun off.

Cenovus = 470 HR people
Tourmaline = 0 HR people
Compare the two stocks directly, and then go read about them on Glassdoor to see the difference in market performance, culture and job satisfaction. To be fair, I have nothing against HR, but how does anyone in our senior leadership or in our board justify this? Only at Cenovus has the HR business become such a massively overinflated and self-relevant business unit. The G & A on HR must be a number to behold!

Maybe they should address the 470 HR staff which includes 70 managers or higher.

Pulled those numbers from workday yesterday
