Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

emit Bangalore

I have been in EMIT bangalore for a couple of years, so far the experience has been mixed. I wondering how others find it working in EMIT? thinking of looking for alternative job opportunities in tech companies like IBM which has a big presence here.

I don’t agree about the low complexity work going to Bangalore, actually most growth is in engineering IT and developer positions. Other work has already gone to MSP.

OP - IBM is a great company but also pretty beaucratic and a dinosaur in a field. If you really want to work for a tech, pick another one!

Ridiculous post.
Any IT professional in Bangalore knows hopping jobs every 2 years is standard.
And going from EM to IBM is at least 3 hops away.

ExxonMobil is an O&G corporation where the information technology group is not core to the production of oil, gas and refined products.

IBM is an IT corporation where you would be working in core business. I am not in EMIT, nor would ever work in a non-core unit of any company.

the work that's going to you are deemed "low value work" by the corporation. Work like updating master data, running scripts, creating IDs, monitoring etc... tasks that can be done by even non-tech people. I'd ask you to consider, do you want to be doing these low value work for the next few years? Because you could find yourself no longer having marketable skills when the bots come for your job.

My advice coming from a location that was doing low value work before this big move to india some years ago. many of my colleagues who were with the company for 15+ years found themselves with few marketable IT skills in their 30s and 40s. They are good honest down-to-earth comp engineering grads who worked hard supporting our IT network and systems, but the opportunites given by the company to low cost locations are low value stuff. interesting work is reserved for the hi-po people. Most often, opportunities are given to the people who are known... it's an old boy's club there and you need visibility. being good at your work isn't enough. you need to hustle hard, find good sponsors/ managers, have a few people in houston know you.

Unless you are hi-po, I'd get out and work in tech companies to gain more valuable experience. The value proposition of exxon used to be that it hires to retire, but that's not so anymore with all these 10% PIPs. There is a shortage of SWEs everywhere and I don't know why good tech people want to stay in EM to do master data update or run scripts, and risk getting PIP. You should take advantage of this tech bo-m and carve your future for the next 20-30 years. Don't believe the promises mgmt tells you about career growth here... we were told the same thing in my location 15+ years ago. All the managers who predicted a bright future for us have already retired, and we now live with the consequences of trusting them. I'm not saying managers are deceitful, but they are only employees themselves, so they have to tell you things that's good for the company (and themselves), not what's good for you. Don't entrust your future to others.
