Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Nike lost the World Cup

What are our marketing teams even doing? Millions of dollars were spent on cramming celebrities into an Ad that made no sense meanwhile adidas’ Ad was everywhere. We couldn’t escape it this World Cup. Who is signing off on these Ads? The London billboard debacle as well was embarrassing. It seems marketing has lost a step. All that effort just for two adidas teams to reach the final is fitting for how Nike’s turnaround has been going

@df did they also get Spain to the final and made them win? Be real dou--ebag. Nike lost with or without FIFA’s involvement.

Let’s not forget how corrupt FIFA is. Not surprised they got Messi to the final.

But can we talk about product and availability?! Nothing in stock, most WC related product wasn’t available until late and now I’m seeing it all over Nike.com AFTER the WC ended. Talk about not maximizing potential on world stage.

Serious Q. How did we land on rip the script as the campaign for WC?

@cb that’s the problem, Nike thinks “consumer insights” is color and trend forecasting, and that’s the only team they kept, when it’s the most useless. Nailed it right there.

Too bad they got rid of the entire consumer insights function, brought in a CMO who doesn’t actually care about the consumer and thinks she knows it all. Her work has been trash since the Paris Olympics, and she doesn’t want to hear otherwise. Garbage in, garbage out. It’s just a giant echo chamber with no outside perspective now.

The amount of je-k off, self congratulatory smugness that Nike has at every level is astounding! Sitting thru an AI labs powerpoint presentation with senior GT leaders pontificating in a mutual love FEST. Like, ba-f.
We're so awesome and cool... We're actually thinking of 'downstream impacts' and 'innovation' and 'prototypes'. WTF! If we're not already doing that as a tech team, AI or shiny tools cannot do the job.
And cold hard truth... 09 forecast to downstream systems is so fuxked up so as to be unusable. If these AI evangelists actually solved real world problems as opposed to sitting in their ivory towers, Nike GT would be less dysfunctional.

@by It’s honestly impressive. Nike literally employs people whose full-time job is forecasting color, trend direction, and cultural relevance months, sometimes years, in advance. They hold workshops, build strategy decks, run “consumer insights,” and spend endless hours talking about how color will define the World Cup.

Then… they ship the exact same color direction everyone else did.

So congratulations on all those trend reports. Turns out the groundbreaking strategy was opening Pinterest, seeing what Adidas and Puma were doing, and calling it “consumer-led innovation.”

This used to be the company that created trends. Now it waits for the trend, copies it, wraps it in a 60-slide deck, and celebrates the “strategic color narrative.”

Innovation at Nike isn’t struggling. It’s dead. It was replaced by committees, PowerPoints, and people congratulating each other for arriving exactly where everyone else already was.

@c3 France didn’t deliver and Zlatan is past his prime. Still what do Kim Kardashian and LeBron have to do with the World Cup?

Let’s not forget the pink cleat debacle. How about we spend the next 4 years to make sure we don’t again use the SAME EXACT colors as all the competitors

@OP They had Messi—the greatest player of his generation—and Spain, arguably the best national team on the planet, plus Lamine Yamal, the biggest teenage phenomenon in world football. We got Kim Kardashian and 40-year-old LeBron… for a FIFA World Cup commercial. What the fu-k does LeBron have to do with the World Cup? The whole thing made absolutely no sense. And somehow the shorter cut managed to be even worse.
