Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Bring on the next RA

Many of us are looking forward to it. Pay me to leave this misery. I'll happily accept.

@a9 I know someone with 35 years that only got 1 month notice and 1 month severance.

I'm in that pushing 60 category and technically just about ready to retire. And I have not had a decent raise in 15 years - so much so that with inflation factored in, i earn less now than I did 15 years ago, despite being in a similar role and way better at it now than I was back then. And also despite having leadership and decision making skills way beyond countless people who are one and two levels above me in the company.
So there is no way that I won't try to correct that serious and ongoing wrong via a substantial severance payment, however long the legal battle for that might be. Hope that explains to you younger people why some of us older ones don't "just retire".

It would be so great to be laid off. Feels like everyone 40 and up is fired for “performance”

I don't disagree with you... just waiting for the axe... I will probably retire anyway then, so I don't really care!

For anyone that is 50+ or pushing 60, and still at IBM, you should be in a good financial position, and it should not matter if you get the axe or not. Sure, it would be nice to be able to milk IBM for a few more years...

The recession is here already - contrary to the positive news that comes out daily from Washington, the Government and private companies are cutting employees, consumer spending is down and FUD prevails on the sidewalks. Restaurants, clothing stores, vacation outlets etc. are all feeling the pain and many going out of business. How many tech companies are actively hiring as they were before and during Covid-19 ? How many are still actively recruiting remote employees ? Suggest that you get your resume ready and start sending it out before the proverbial axe makes an appearance. The IBM Grim Reaper doesn't wait for anyone or anything and you can't escape - it's like death and taxes.

The job market su-ks... It is not time to get laid off. You may want to leave IBM if you can secure a job somewhere else.

A recession is coming, it is overdue.

Is the job market that good that you want to get RA'd? I don't think so.

In Ontario Canada there is a common law precedent that awards one month of severance for every year of service assuming a good track record and that the company cannot make a case that you were terminated for cause. This is often capped at 24 months but can go higher depending on the specific details of your history at the company and your personal situation like age etc.
IBM will never offer this up-front - you need to first receive the layoff and IBM's offer and then hire a lawyer to negotiate for you. I believe lawyers will charge between 25% and 35% of the total severance that they negotiate for you, assuming you engage them on a contingency basis, which to me seems the only safe way to go so that their interests are aligned with yours and your downside is limited.

@bz

So do we see Slob Thomas with his pathetic hoodie and Krabanaugh? Give some goofy kickoff video ?

Meanwhile those 2 clods probably need someone to do the challenge for them

Watson Ex Lax is a giant piece of trash

Yes, my post was deleted....

Here again... Sign up for the Watson challenge, join a team and do nothing.
What really counts is to sign up/register... that is what RT wants, 100% registration so he can claim that the whole IBM is Watson/AI experts.

Lol!! Let's see if this post gets deleted... Rob?

@OP

It's amazing how closely these boards are monitored - I notice several postings here have disappeared today because someone couldn't handle the truth.

It says a lot about the man who is ultimately responsible for Layoffs@IBM.

I worry there will be more large-scale RAs with the new (returning) bell-curve performance management. 15% of the workforce will be PIP’d instead, requiring no severance payments.

Approx 25 years total there on multiple tours. Honestly there is no reason to work there unless you are desperate for a job. It is a dumpster fire now. Openly dis obeying Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. So many unqualified people hired and promoted based on race, religion, connections, skin color, ethnicity etc. Advertising college degrees are no longer needed. Moving almost every job to India. When I joined in the early 80s it was great and everything was professional and well run and customers knew and wanted IBM solutions. Now it is like a bunch of sea shells you see on the beach that Arvind and Rob Thomas like so they buy them. Pathetic and sad.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a federal law that prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, s-x, and national origin. It applies to employers, employment agencies, labor organizations, and training programs. The law aims to ensure equal employment opportunities and prevent discriminatory practices in various aspects of employment, including hiring, promotion, and termination.

If you have a lot of time with IBM for example more than 20 years you’re still going to get only 3 months severance

I know someone who had over 35 years and he got only 3 months

Meanwhile Alvind will probably get 100 million in 2026
