Stressed Manager

My manager seemed very stressed out today while dumping work on me. He said that a big wave is coming on July 16 and that he does not know his or anyone’s future at this point.
I do not even feel like working for next two weeks. Problem is that he is still expecting us to work on full 100% throttle.

Leadership is creating very toxic work environment.

Lost 50 percent of my team between last 2 RIF's so I think any manager is becoming a realist on the spiral. Shortages on manning make any outage a ticking bo-b. Things are going to get worse

OP, so word of advice, my manager did this in December. Two weeks before layoff he randomly started making a bunch of comments to me “I’m worried about my own job. No idea what’s going on. If there are cuts I hope I have a say. Just know, if I had a say it wouldn’t be you. I actually think I might be the one getting canned I’m worried myself” Found out he stacked ranked me bottom on his team and he in fact already knew at the time of making all those comments I was on the list and I was the only one being let go lol. He was trying to give me the impression he had no idea so I would think he had nothing to do with it. Of course the day of, “I’m just as shocked as you are. I did not see this coming nothing makes sense to me right now. I’m not sure what’s happening” when in fact it was his choice lol. Needless to say things def did not quite go as he had planned lol.

Your manager is putting on a great act if you believe for one second he is stressed about anything other than his own future. It checks out, given this company’s managerial smugness.

@cb funny thing is that they are laying off engineers

That’s the first sign that your manager SU-KS….. that would be something my manager says and honestly they are the worst manager I’ve seen at the big V . Clearly can’t handle it and is fairly new … treats people horrible and karma couldn’t be nicer than to get rid of them sooner rather than later … extremely toxic both 1st and 2nd level .

We need less secretaries ( aka: managers, directors) and more engineers.

Multiple references to LHH due to management positions being prequalified to be RIF candidates?

Agree, delay LHH. I wasn’t ready to look right away. Waited until the last day allowed, to engage them. They aren’t great but it’s not a resource you want to throw away.

stressed about what? how big the manager's compensation package will be? they do easy secretarial work all day, which is mostly nothing while you get dunked on by angry customers

LHH is total su-k and waste of time, if you get any offer (recruiter approaching you) grab it asap without comparing it to your current package.

@bf Lee Hecht Harrison - outplacement firm provided for those impacted by a RIF

@bf it's the outplacement / career counselling service offered. Some folks sh-t on it but I found it useful at a minimum to have a third party human at the other end talking you through the next steps, whatever that may be.

@ap what is LHH?

Your manager did you a solid. Be thankful. Take action now for yourself. Cancel ALL vacation time to save it for the payout. If you can, "move" to NJ - that gives you 90 days of breathing room instead of 30. When you get the axe, all of your work-related access will be cut. You'll have email and basic employee internet, but your ability to work will be removed. You will be a lame duck between notification and last day.

If they offer you LHH outplacement, DELAY starting it as long as possible. You'll need time after your last day to clear your head and de-Verizon yourself.

Remember - you are going to be OK. It's just going to su-k for a little while.
