You sound like a typical masshole. You failed up. I was a front line manager. Directors and VPs put names of high performers ahead of their favorites. Just admit it. You/they/them/it let go of high performers and are now dumping on them. Maybe if you did better as a leader you wouldn’t have to let people go. Bet that thought didn’t cross your mind.

Not smug at all. I run a large organization and deal with all kinds of workers, and the bottom 5% is just that, and who said I am a he?

I think you should take your advice and improve your grammar and spelling skills.

In US, manager definitely knows. But they won't tell anything till Friday EOD and Monday they will provide more info. That's what I got from my manager.

the director is smug and dancing on layoffs to pat himself on the back.

virtually anything is better than his advice:

  1. make yourseslf more marketabale
  2. get outside trianing and eduction
  3. network both inside and outside dell
  4. then find a better company to work for

Shocked but not surprised at the responses to @dno+1l5K68tV's post.

Seriously curious as to what the alternatives to "always shown up, worked hard, been effective, and put our customers first" are?

Especially given that's what's being asked of you?

I’d hate to work for you and welcome being layed off for not being in your circle jerk club.

It is a mixed bag. I am a director and let folks go this week, including managers. Obviously, those who were let go did not know. Those who did know were strictly forbidden to say anything. That is just how it works.

I will say this, In my org, it was not based on age, how much you made, or any other criteria except how you stacked against your peers, period. People claiming to be top performers that were let go tell themselves that to make themselves feel better. I have been with this group of companies for over 17 years and started as a lowly level one engineer. I have always shown up, worked hard, been effective, and put our customers first. Never once have I worried about being laid off.

Wake up, and in your next role, change yourself.

I asked my manager yesterday and she said she didn’t know anything. Not sure if she was lying or just didn’t really know anything. Now just taking it day by day praying I don’t get that meeting invite

A first line manager only knows if they have direct reports being let go. If they have a good relationship with their Director they may know more.

Depends on the leadership team, some directors trust thier team others dont.. if they trust thier team of managers then they know.. if not then I would want to work in that business unit. Hard to fix things if no one trust each other

Yes, managers know. At least whether or not their team is getting hit. Anyone who is saying differently is full of it. I suggest sending your manager an email saying something like, "hey, i saw the email from jeff clarke... is our division going to be hit?"

Thats what i did and i got my answer in 10 minutes. We aren't/weren't being hit.

I'm pretty sure for Directors, VP's, SVP's, etc... HR is the only ones who actually know. My dad was a president for AMD and that's how it worked there anyways. I imagine it's the same or very similar for Dell as well.
