When are you notified of the severance amount? I mean the amount that is given after tax deducted etc.

If the OP is such dire straights money wise, being ignorant on their tax obligations is not something he/she can afford.
@qhl+1oQ3zqka, you get a grip. You know nothing about this person and what obligations they have that might cause them to live close to the bone. Also, not everybody at Dell has salaries and/or tenure that can let them coast for a while.
OP, the severance in the US is typically 2 months + 1 week per year of service + pro-rated bonus.
This is communicated during the layoff meeting with HR and manager. After the lump sum tax (22%) and FICA/Medicaid, you're looking about about a third of that check going to Uncle Sam. Best of luck in your search!
