Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Will Schwab ever become a meritocracy?

Do you think there will ever be a change to the current structure where promotion is based on who you know, and not on your performance and accomplishments?

Pretty ridiculous to see senior executives that do not have more than a bachelor's degree. If even that. No surprise that many at that level are lacking the intellectual capacity to lead efficiently.

Those people know that they will never get a comparable job anywhere else and will do anything to stay creating a cesspool of political games and backstabbing.

This place is definitely not about knowing your stuff and doing the work. The people who do the work are often overlooked for people who brown nose and do very little work. In fact there’s a lot of mainpulation that goes into getting noticed. Not a meritocracy. Merit is not a prerequisite for promos, it’s who you know and who likes you and who you haven’t alienated.

As if degrees determine intelligence or merit… LOL. Some of the d-mbest people I’ve ever worked with have a PhD. And some of the smartest I’ve worked with have GEDs. There is no correlation with degrees and merit. Trust that.

@e3 reddit is a leftist cesspool so none of us are going there. The post is spot on if you can think for yourself and read it.

No. The entire country isn’t even a meritocracy, that’s why we legalize and condone farming out jobs to third-world nations whose qualifications are, if we were remotely honest, suspect to say the least. For God’s sake, we have honest-to-God nepotists in this thread arguing its inclusion in hiring is merit-based. We live in a deeply sick country with a sick system, obsessed only with making one more barrel of cash no matter the cost. America hasn’t been for Americans for a long time, and Schwab was probably never about “Schwabbies.”

Not like it matters anyway. In another 10 years this company will all be either Indians or AI.

Schwab is clearly not a meritocracy. It's more like a welfare state. It is absolutely baffling that they pay bonuses and stock awards to non producing employees. Unless you are bringing client assets into this firm you should not be eligible for a bonus. He-l, if it were up to me, all employees, including the low level people in Ops, risk, marketing, compliance, and tech, would need to bring us at least five quality leads a week to just keep their jobs.

@cw Very true. A member of the Executive Committee told me how early on he asked if he could take the minutes for Board meetings and how that opened the door to so many things. I just don't see these youngsters today taking that kind of initiative. They expect everything to be handed to them while they complain about the lack of meritocricy. Sounds like what they really want is for management to signoff on their laziness.

In our team we just promoted a engineer who doesn't know how to create a pull request. My team is full of 90s graduates with Zero Technical Skills. So Mediocrity Wins Big at Schwab. Fu-k Meritocracy.

"the current structure where promotion is based on who you know". That is meritocracy. Getting to know the right people is merit. I akways emphasize face time with my people. Between volunteer opportunities, programs like aspiring leaders, and special projects, there are plenty of opportunities at Schwab and the sky is truly the limit. But if you want to just sit pretty in your comfort zone then don't expect a promotion. That's not exhibiting merit.
