Exxon is very careful when outright firing employees. I only know of 5 or six employees terminated by exxon in the past 20 years. Two were fired because of a physical fight altercation. One was fired for not coming into work for two years. Another refused to do training and safety work assigned for two years. One employee stole 500k of equipment over ten years and was fired. In all of these cases exxon compiled evidence and waited until there was overwhelming negligence by the employees. The reason it is hard to get fired is the fear of a wrongful termination lawsuit by the fired employee. An employee would lose over a million dollars in pension and healthcare benefits if terminated. So it takes certain exceptional things to get you fired. If you just show up and do minimal work you wont be fired. PIP is different and is easier to get rid of employees. PIP is well documented and full of perceptions and BS. PIP is exxon's magic bullet and if they want you out there is no hope. PIP s can be made impossible to pass or easy to pass. The author is totally right. It’s practically impossible to get fired and honestly easy to get PIPd if you slack off for a single year in a competitive rank group.

I know two who were fired in the last month
There was a guy that was fired for stealing either rolls and rolls of toilet papers or paper towels.
We have an employee that has been dozing off for years. They are still here sitting sleeping. We have employees watching you tube all day and movies. They are still employeed. One of them even got a excellent rating for watching movies and you tube all day.
And now the snake is at Merck , good riddance
Total lies. One guy from Clinton got canned due to dozing off. Didn't take a couple of years, took couple of weeks
