Legg Visit Middletown

Was great hearing from our CTO today at the TDP space on the 5th floor. Lots of wisdom imparted on us

I heard today that they are going to shut down midtown and move them to Lenox. More head count cuts on the way.

@tm That is correct. I was referring to mainly Software Engineers but you're right as $98k is a lot for a non software engineer role and still a great income for SWE as well.

Not all TDP are software engineers. So yes, 98k for a non-engineer/developer is a lot.

“ Potty Mouth. Didn't like it.”

Not only is that completely unprofessional, but it’s as fake as a $3 bill. He thinks using profanity makes him seem more ‘down to earth’ (for us plebes). However, anyone with a modicum of intelligence can see past the (thin) facade. He’s an elitist who looks down his nose at us lowly worker bees.

Potty Mouth. Didn't like it. Sc--w It, Shit this and Sht that. Didn't like it. I forbid cursing at home and do not need to hear it at work especially at a Software Symposium by a Leader.

“ But dang, starting out at 98k is wild.”

lol FAANG and all the other big tech/unicorn start ups pay way more for an entry level Software Engineer. These TDPers are only here for the experience and then will apply to better companies once they finish the program

@h4

AT&T wouldn’t be able to afford grads from GTech, they’re too busy actually going to serious tech companies

Post ID: @hn+1jvtm9hj5

@gw I usually hard disagree with the DEI whiners but it is out of control in TDP. The tech market is so saturated, just get grads that know what they’re doing, and went to good schools, not South Texas State HBCU. Mind boggling

At least 50%+ of TDPs in Dallas and Atlanta should be from UT Austin and Georgia Tech respectively. There’s no excuse to hire them from these sh---y schools, where they know nothing. This will define the failure of Leggs career at T in the future. A CTO that doesn’t know where good engineering talent comes from, ironic as it gets.

If it was as your son or daughter, you’d be bragging about the program.

I told mine to take their degree and go work somewhere else, which they have. As a poster before said, TDP is glorified OJT, albeit with a nice pay scale.

@ew One of the key requirements of getting accepted into the TDP new grad position is by having a 4 year degree in a STEM related field or major. For interns, they need to be pursuing an undergraduate degree or be a masters student to be eligible for the internship program.

When someone here says "fresh out of college," it probably really means that the poster has 25+ years with the company and thinks anyone under 30 is "fresh out of college."

I don't think you have to have a college degree to do TDP. Someone posted on here a while back that she had been tapped from a retail store.

But dang, starting out at 98k is wild.

Honestly, I’d take over confident.

A year or two ago, I heard some TDP kid took the opportunity, --in the middle of a director's team meeting in front of the entire team--, to say that he'd like to see about moving to a different assignment bc he didn't find his interesting enough.

starting is around $98K for TDPs. They only get $130K once they graduate out of the program onto their actual work team

That's still one heck of a raise trajectory.

Post ID: @et+1jvtm9hj5

@ep No so they have 2 years to complete the program. For each year, they work on a different team, so 2 teams overall. It’s really a 12 month rotational program with 2 rotations to complete. If a team likes them, then they graduate early and get hired onto that team. Otherwise, they continue to work with their current team and move to their next team. Usually they get a 3-4% raise every year from their $98K base up till 2 years. Once that’s completed, if their 2nd rotation team likes them, then they get hired on full time with that big pay raise from where they currently are.

"They only get $130K once they graduate out of the program onto their actual work team."

So, they do a 6-12 month rotational and then get a 30% raise?

But they’re not paid $130K fresh out of college lmao. Who gave u that info? Look at what the dude posted below me… just below 6 figures

@dp Here in NJ, the starting is around $98K for TDPs. They only get $130K once they graduate out of the program onto their actual work team.

cant say all. but most wtf? college dei degree and jump right into an industry they know nothing about and basically get OJT'd.. why not just hire them out of High school to be managers of engineers that have 20+ years hands on experience, same difference right? Of the TDP's I've used in the past, it was a waste of MY time, where we basically paid someone to be trained in the job, listen, and produce nothing, then after 6 months they move on. Give me a permanent employee that seeks out the specific job I have on deck and is willing to stay long term.

“ Every TDPer I've worked with has always acted like a deer in headlights with no clue or overly self-confident with no clue.“

Honestly, I’d take over confident. It’s been my experience that they say nothing, ever. Our Directors make US engage THEM and explain what we’re doing. No questions. No interaction. No thank yous. No indication they understand anything at all.

“Because they do not have the technical knowledge they need for the position.”

And you know all of them and all their skills and all their promise……. Seems like you don’t have the basic skills to grow and harvest a future workforce.

If it was as your son or daughter, you’d be bragging about the program.

*How the F do you know? *

Because they do not have the technical knowledge they need for the position. We are having to cover BASIC sh-t with them. This is Atlanta, not CA. 130k fresh out of college without enough technical knowledge=not worth 130k in GA.

@df TDP salaries are significantly lower when they start since it’s literally a 2 year rotational program, where they’re working with a cohort of people that are 95% recent college grads. Once they graduate the program, meaning a team picks them up full time onto their team, then their salaries jump straight to an L2 level.

Every TDPer I've worked with has always acted like a deer in headlights with no clue or overly self-confident with no clue. One canceled a metting bc he was 'afraid to look stupid' because he didn't know the program he was supposed to be lead. His words, not mine. But they're getting paid the same as most of the L2s that have been there 20+ years.

“ What is a TDP?”
Technical Development Program - It’s where they take recent college grads and put them in a program that takes them straight to the L3 and up ranks. They bounce then through different groups in 6 month increments, then after a few increments, they get picked up by a team and become our bosses. Us filthy monkey current employees aren’t eligible to even apply. Nothing like that exists for us.

I was there too, Legg imparted much wisdom on us. I think my favorite piece of advice that he gave was outsourcing my bank account to India to cut bank account management costs. Now, I don’t have any money to manage in my bank at all, great ROI and I saved huge on costs. I’m confused on how I buy food now though.
