Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

We are screwed

Tiger gone and no innovation. Old heads still running the show and ki-ling it.

Even the nurse shoes Hoka makes is more innovative than all of Nike now.

It isn’t just HOKA stealing Nike’s lunch money. ON Holdings is having a moment too, with better styling than HOKA and really comfortable shoes.

It’s important to remember that at one time adidas owned sports apparel and footwear. Then a scrappy company called Nike came along and stole their reign. No one should think that Nike, like adi, can’t be taken down a notch or two. We’re already losing footwear market share and lulu and a bunch of other companies are slowly stealing other small but important market segments.

Whether it’s a country or a company, the most powerful players rarely see their own decline until it’s too late. Nike needs to relearn how to innovate, and fast. We stopped doing that a few years ago. It’s unfortunate that it’s been years since I’ve seen product that genuinely got me excited. We also need to relearn how to market in a compelling way. These days I don’t see the same types of inspiring and compelling messages that used to be Nike’s calling card. Nike should drop the cultural & tribal postering it has embraced in recent years and go back to big ideas that resonate with and inspire everyone. Remember the fat kid commercial? “Find Your Greatness”, from 2013 or thereabouts. THAT was brilliant. We don’t do that kind of brilliance anymore.

We know the formula. We just aren’t doing it anymore. We better start doing it again soon because the runway to regain our mojo is getting shorter with each passing month.

Don't know why cross-pollination of shoe tech doesn't happen. I might be ignorant about it but the last innovation of running shoes was the VaporFly Next% with the Carbon Fiber plate. This was such a doped shoe that the Olympics (almost?) had to ban it and other athletes were forced to buy them.

Why not take that tech. and apply to like Soccer and Football? Don't they need to run fast too?

Bag on HOKA all day but they went from $0 to $2B pretty fast. We walked away from the running business when we destroyed the silos and stopped focusing on the runner and just milking franchises to their death.

LOL.. Ugly or not, Hoka is just one of MANY running and lifestyle brands chipping away that market share daily. Visited a very big Nike DTC store last weekend and the footwear just looked tired. You can only recycle a design element so many times before a consumer gets bored.

@drp+1qth8uTy They are 100% more comfortable and supportive than anything Nike makes. I don't care about innovation, I care about not having my feet hurt.

@huu Innovation literally laid off some of the only people building a bridge between teams and kept the gossip aficionados who shut down everyone who doesn't play their way. Why they haven't cleaned house in that org is beyond me. Move them out or move them on.

@ywn+1qth8uTy Not holding the leaders in innovation accountable is the biggest miss right now. I am guessing hundreds of millions are invested with relatively little to show for it. That org Director up have either been are sitting in their roles for years with a few sh-t-delivering yes-man's being promoted and seen as the future leaders of the org. it's only getting worse. This will likely hurt us for the long time.

Nike keeps moving the deck chairs around on the Titanic. The same senior leaders that have dried up innovation are still there. What Nike needs back are true product people - not these merchandisers that pose as product people. Moving people around that don't have the skill sets we need will result in the same.

@bii+1qth8uTy holding on to legacies of power is how the great nations of history always die. Not learning to evolve is the problem.

Tiger would not save Nike, but for any employee working on anything to do with Nike golf, you might want to start actively job hunting….

The old heads are the ones who will save the company.. By laying off all these new foolish hires.
Prove me wrong.
You’ll see.

Those old heads running around is why we’re all employed today and the top sportswear company in the world. Never forget that. If you stay, you too will be an old head running around, so have respect.
Secondly, Tiger is amazing and when he was hot, it was hot, but he’s getting older and may have other goals in mind. That’s ok!
Times are shifting and that’s ok too but at the same time, innovation has never been more important. The whole world is watching and we should be up for the challenge!!!
The world has changed for everyone! I thought everyone wanted a new start? Well, here’s our chance.

Like it or not, people are buying Hoka- more and more…that alone should keep people up at knight. Fit and comfort for different (non Nike) feet are important to maintain market presence . As for innovation, yeah, bad leadership in NXT and NSRL. JH isn’t going to make things better unless he fires some higher-ups

Totally agree, but let's not be so deep in our as--s, that even a 50 year old Golfer left us!

What’s innovative about Hoka?

If you think hanging on to a nearly 50yr old golfer is the “future” for Nike then I think there may be a misunderstanding.
