Stupid Boston Dynamics Robot Dog

So disappointing to see all the LinkedIn posts and self congratulatory remarks from management on the Boston dynamics dog. I am in the Permian and no one has talked to us about if we need a robot dog. Looks like a new toy with no use case. Post some videos of the stupid thing out in the field doing something useful. I’m not impressed to see it walking around at EMHC. Also did a business unit request this or did someone think it was a great idea and now we will be forced to use it. I don’t see a use for it in the Permian or Guyana.

@1gul+1dcxayZr Do you mean the Research Valuation exercise that resulted in astronomical valuations being attached to useless projects?

Wow, some of you guys are so bitter. Why don’t you go work somewhere else!

This dog reminded me of our stupid URC Commercial Advisors and their enthusiasm in spending a year on one the most d-mb activities that EM has ever seen.

“Solution” looking for problems. HQ is obsessed with improving things in the field. As a site person I wish EMIT would ask us directly instead of going to the various non-operations people they call “customers”.

@dvc+1dcxayZr The dog may have the ability to do that but we all know EMIT doesn’t have the ability to roll it out. Best they can do is walk it around the lobby. Word is they have had it for years and done nothing with it.

Boston Dynamic's robot dog and other robot/drone technology providers will eventually replace many workers in our refineries and chemical plants especially for routine walk arounds and inspections.

Is it true that the robot dog is DW’s replacement?

Go read about the dog.

ExxonMobil has struggled to innovate and maybe this is why. When people try something different, they get attacked.

While I don’t consider buying a toy to be innovation, I am actually impressed by the sensing technology involved in this dog.

Can it scan a refinery and give us a digital blueprint? Can it be outfitted with other sensors and roam a plant detecting temperature or acoustic anomalies? Can it roam the floors of campus making sure all you slackers stay at your desk until 5?

So many possibilities.

I applaud the efforts to try something new. While we have enjoyed some of the highest costs of production and continue to lose our market cap leadership to the likes of COMCAST, we can’t keep doing the same things and expect a comeback.

If that dog can replace a few of you, or provide early warning of equipment failure, or help us get the data we need to make better decisions, I’m supportive of giving the dog a badge.

Also in EMIT and previously on one of the teams that attempted the impossible task of pushing new technologies into the business before the business was ready. It’s no wonder that EMIT dissolved that group not too long ago. It was a exercise in futility. Many times, I have been contacted years later by the folks that said no to whatever technology we were pitching, only to finally show interest way past the expiration date. Truly, yesterday’s technology delivered tomorrow. Many of of us gave up trying as the rest of the business units are just as stiff, slow to adapt and curmudgeonly as EMIT is.

I am in EMIT and know the folks touting the success and couldn’t agree more. Seems like such a waste.

@hpo+1dcxayZr So quiet? No use cases or requests from outside EMHC to use the dog? Oh let me guess you can’t tell us because it is proprietary. Right.

A few years ago I saw Spot walking around Science 1. It's not the first time they've brought it around.

This is a perfect example of how everything at Exxon has turned into a performative (robot) dog and pony show. There are so may people in leadership just trying to get out that next bit of glitz and shiny and completely ignoring the fundamental need to be....wait for it...profitable.

@hpo+1dcxayZr The dog isn’t a person lol. Judgement day hasn’t arrived. It is just a remote control toy still.

@hpo+1dcxayZr hardly. We don’t like the dog. Your response is to shut down discussion? Why not reply explaining why it is such a revolutionary idea that will save the company?

lol, so true. The classic XOM lifers are pushing back on LinkedIn to show how "cool" it is to work at XOM. So cool that you get to see a robot walking around doing nothing in a lobby of one of the offset H buildings. Typical 2016 tech just now being introduced at a campus with no use case. That's XOM for you....
