Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Work from home February 19-23?

There’s a rumor that the week of February 19-23rd we will be asked to work remote. It is speculated that that week is when layoffs will happen. Does anyone have any real knowledge of this or is it just made up speculation? Has anyone been asked to WFH that week yet?

I checked a Tech HR person's calendar, and in addition to the usual meetings during the day, there is a "Busy all-day meeting" stretching Mon Feb 19 - Wed Feb 21.

We were going to have EMEA folks in town the week of the 19th, rescheduled for the following week.

What did we think would happen when Nike embraced Colin Kaepernick and morbidly obese mannequins?

Everyone involved in silly decision making should feel the full weight of the axe.

No they need to have calls as they have to notify you of the package before they cut your access. How else would they notify you? They don’t have want the it help desk telling them they don’t have a job on campus.

Not a rumor. WFH because there will be no 15min calls to be laid off. You’ll just have your access cut off. So nice of them to just rescind your access.

It’s correct that this is a distraction tactic to Wall Street to juice profits without growing sales. In fact it will likely have the opposite effect to crater sales even more. Wall Street wants a growth story not a cost story but the donkeys in charge can’t see that.

As for the Warn list people mention. People that got laid off got two months pay. That was their 60 day warn before they received addition severence, if any.
Per CNN and new laws that went into place Jan 1st, 2023.
"If a company lays you off abruptly, it may be found to have complied with the WARN Act so long as the effective date of your layoff is at least 60 days after the day you got notice that you’re being let go, said employment attorney Alex Granovsky, cofounder of the New York-based law firm Granovsky & Sundaresh."

The looming layoff rumors are undoubtedly based on historical fact. If the rumored 2,000+ reduction is accurate, this is nothing more than Donahoe's desperation to shake the stock out of its year-long lull. It's the classic play. Wall Street loves layoffs, and it's a "LOOK!!... Something Shiny!!" move that dog whistles to the Street that Nike is being "fiscally responsible, bold and making the right moves for shareholder value." It's a sham, and it's ignoring the real issues with the brand right now; the failed gender strategy, a serious lack of storytelling, and a flat innovation agenda. The brand is boring, transactional and lacks any of the life and culture it had for many years. I sold all my stock at $10, and have never looked back.

Nike hasn’t reported on the Oregon warn list. So it’s possible we have some VPs and small groups around WHQ but isn’t huge here. I’m actually pretty optimistic that most of us will be fine and other areas outside Oregon are the ones that will take the big hit.

I moved back to the Bay Area because my spouse was offered a position that would allow him to be more involved in our kids lives/better work-life balance for him and we would be closer to family again (2020 in Portland was also absolutely nuts for us and we wanted out). When I put in my resignation with Nike in 2020 my manager asked me to stay and just be remote, so I did. Fast forward to last fall like commenter below said and all the sudden I'm no longer allowed to be remote. I have a ton of PTO and we get 4 remote work weeks so I've been trying to come to Portland every 4 weeks and then otherwise using remote work weeks and PTO but that will run out fast. Agree with the poster that said it's impossible to find jobs right now.

Just curious why people moved away. I realize Seattle is commutable if you have a house there and rent a cheap room in a house or studio here for during the week Monday thru Thursday. What other locations are people commuting from? How far? Bend? Astoria?

@dwa+1qZE0Kms your question probably should be it’s own thread vs. nesting it under here where people are looking for actual solid intel on layoff timing… but your question is a good one.

I know that many of us who moved away are slumming it in Beaverton hotels right now trying to figure out when or if the RTO push is going to cool down. It’s possible that you might be able to fly under the radar in a few months if you’re good at your job and your manager isn’t incompetent and is in your corner. I wouldn’t put it past Nike to fire you, but I feel like there’s a lot of red tape involved with that and you will probably see it coming a mile off in the form of PIPs etcetera. Congrats on getting a few months ahead of the rest of us on your job search and good luck.

If you went remote and were asked to come back in person but you chose not to come back, then your employment could be terminated due to non-compliance of the RTO policy. You may not get a severance package. There may be some exceptions but I don’t know for sure. Good luck!

Genuine question about severance/layoffs. I've been with the company 8 years and had to relocate during covid due to spouses career and was allowed to work remote (VP approved, not just manager). Along with everyone else I found out last fall that we were coming back to in-person and immediately started looking for jobs. (What people are saying about trying to find jobs right now is true, it's impossible. After applying to hundreds I've only had 3 interviews and no offers even as a manager. There's always someone who's overqualified who can beat me out because they're willing to take a pay cut to just get a job.) Anyways I'm finally starting to think I'm not going to find anything soon. When I'm let go from the company (I'm assuming I'll be part of layoffs for being remote) will I get severance or will they fire me based on me no longer being able to meet minimum requirements/not showing up in person?

During a recent previous round, our team was told we were safe. "Don't worry."

A VP and a percentage of the org were let go.

They told the VP we were safe so he wouldn't realize he was getting canned.

Don't believe ANYTHING right now.

Last time they did this in Oct/Nov, they didn't let people know until the morning of. They asked people who were on their way to the office to turn around and go back home.

Messy. Especially when so many of us come in very early to work with our EMEA partners.

Just a rumor at this point. HR has finally started prepping leaders for the emotional roller coaster though, so it’s happening next week and (or) the week after for sure.
