Current Optum employee. Hearing that they will now be expanding return to office (odd way to characterized it, since so many were never in an office to begin with at this point) to include additional GL's and regions.

Stated reasons all have to do with some nebulous "office and corporate culture, making connections" pseudo-hippy, kumbaya sounding nonsense.

@bs I definitely think it depends on the area, and the management - in my area, for example, we actually consolidated several buildings because so many people became TCs. Optum, UHG, and UHC buildings were consolidated from several different cities/towns. We're no longer in five different buildings that could house several thousand employees and are not on one floor on a three story building that can house maybe 200 people on that floor on any given day.

"I saw it on Tik Tok, it must be true"... OMG, seriously? Is that what some of you believe? SMH - no wonder some of y'all are getting laid off.

@kc TX has the largest pool of employees but smallest office/parking size. The first is MN and WA. Stop spreading random rumors.

I love that people just randomly throw location like a tossing coin: so far, NJ, Boston, now TX, CA. Lol.

Heres the latest. MN and TX need to return to office. CA will as well but not right now.

There is an article in the MN Star Tribune that confirms that HYBRID workers are being required to RTO. Not anyone who is an official/permanent telecommuter. Not that it couldn't change, but it isn't everyone.

@jk I suggest you reread the telecommute policy that was just updated 10 days ago that you were not aware that they updated it to the new requirements. Also, we all need to be updating our resume and be aware that it could happen. Nobody is safe. Nobody is untouchable..

20,000,!? RTO?!? My whole team is telecommuting (remote not hybrid) most live over 2 hrs from the closest office and have been for years. We all were hired remote (not hybrid) our boss is no where near us? Is this RTO for the whole company? Just part? And 20k people RIF? What area? This is too vague.

@je : One of the side effect of having hybrid people back to office is the resentments/feeling of unfair between employees. I can sense that from you. I understand that being in office su-ks, but you are also hiring as hybrid from the start. Just saying. In the end, yes, majority of us might be all back to office. (i don’t believe in ALL, but yeah, majority or as many as their office capacity can handle).

What is have learned about this The Layoff site is that there is always some truth as to what is being said. People are in denial thinking it can't be done there are too many of us, where will our desks be, where will we park. They will figure it all out and it wont be in our favor.

Look up the telecommute policy they just updated under the Company policies on UHC updated it 10 days ago. Tell me what you think then they never let us know that they update it, but it clearly is outlined in there if you can’t read between those lines what they plan on doing that’s crazy They do have a plan. They just haven’t came out and said @ex

@e2 warn act does not apply United is the master at evading this by not letting everyone go at the same time like with the advocates there were not more than 50 in a state.

Can anyone be more specific about who this affects? Clearly it isn't "everyone" (yet). I do know of someone at Optum whose team has been told they have to RTO, but I haven't heard of any on the UHC side.

Looks like they just recently updated the telecommuter policy on 6/15.

There’s one section that stood out to me in particular, “As with all employment at UnitedHealth Group, the employment relationship is “at will” and the initiation of a telecommuting arrangement is not a guarantee of continuing employment. Telecommuting is not an entitlement, a promise, or contract of employment, nor is it a promise of contract of any specific terms or conditions of employment”

@dq : There are UHC facilities everywhere. But TX alone has 32,000 employees with most of people using car. The capacity of the facilities can not sustain all of them, including space for employees and parking lot. The building in Dallas or FortWorth for example, can sustain about less than 1000 parking lot each. Maybe just barely support a portion of hybrid employees.

The comments on these posts are astounding. Read the room. Steve's way is buying companies to get customers and laying off people to capture profit.

(Customers 1 + Revenue 1 + Cost 1) + (Customers 2 + Revenue 2 + Cost 2) = Larger Company with more customers
Then Layoffs
Larger Company - Cost 2 = same larger company, higher margin

Wash, rinse, repeat. RTO is layoffs with extra steps.

Only problem is the world has changed and the market knows this: flat stock despite the deluge of positive articles UHG is buying.

@dg Speaking for myself I was in my 20's when I started working for the company coming into the office every day. Then we graduated to being able to work from home twice a week and then Covid hit and we went remote. Now I am 32 I don't think I qualify to be in the old school folks category yet quite lol. Covid brought changes that no one expected there is a chance in the future we may all need to return to the office or think about looking elsewhere but keep in mind wherever you go it may change there as well.

@dg that’s exactly what I told my husband. I was just hired for an internal remote role where my team is based out of Colorado. I live in Texas. I don’t understand how RTO would work for those who are fully remote teams. UHG offered telecommute before covid and it got even more popular after. Everyone sh*t on Witty, but at least he was a big support of WFH.

@df If you work for that long, you belong to the old school folks. But you ignore that lots of UHC office are closed now, UHC hired lots of remote employees in the past 10 years. Capacity wise, this is impossible. This means if they are serious, they need to buy / acquire new Realestate in other locations.

In another word, if the company forced this on you, please don’t move if this means selling your house/uprooting your family, as it’s just a layoff in disguise.

I find it odd that people think that just because they were hired as remote they should be entitled to remain that way. Many of us were hired prior to there being a such thing as hybrid or remote and we came in everyday. Things changed and we went remote and now it appears that things may change again. Its starting out with just a couple of states it seems but eventually it will trickle down to other states. Just need to go with the flow.

I can understand the hybrid employees as these were people who most likely were already going into an office pre-covid. But why the telecommuters? They were hired as remote and never designated a home office before. Seems pretty d-mb but then again, this company is going down the sh*tter.
