Thread regarding T. Rowe Price Group Inc. layoffs

Tech org layoffs?

Has there been any chatter about tech org restructuring or even vague rumors? It seems like it hasn’t come up at all(other than offshoring helpdesk) and can’t think of any obvious targets based on anything happening, but another poster suggested it might be the target of a round coming up soon.

@e20 Of course - that would all be GLORIOUS for them. Devastating for us. I get "cost-savings", but the Accenture folks they hired over the summer cannot even be compared to the previous people working in those roles. I guess they are going with a "good enough" model instead of excellence. It is really sad as all of this was unnecessary. Those of us who have been there a minute remember when you really felt like this company had your back and you had a lot of opportunity here. Now it feels like they resent all of us, and are looking at each of us to decide whether to can us for AI or FIS or cheap labor who can do OK if they have a script to work off. I tune out the AI meetings at this point, because it is clear that they don't welcome current staff into doing more with AI. They'll get all Accenture people. AI is not all of that - there have been stories already of AI being wrong - like the kid eating chips and the AI monitoring system said he had a we-pon in his hand. AI tools with GMAIL and X-AI have also posted wrong information. Currently there are huge lawsuits against Google because their chatbot is spreading lies about public figures and chatbots are also encouraging children to harm themselves. But yeah, jump in with both feet immediately. We no longer set the trends, we follow the "latest thing".

@e1c It is also possible IT will take the path RPS did several years ago with moving IT functions to FIS. Ops could move teams to Accenture and remain on campus. Functions like HAM, SAM, Platforms support can easily move and save costs allowing Accenture to cut the expensive labor.

@dy9 Is it a worry that they may do a mass layoff as part of the town hall? 30 minutes town hall doesn’t give a lot of time for questions. A hurried exit?

@dy9 What town hall? I’m in tech and have nothing like that on my calendar Thursday. Maybe it’s only part of the tech org.

@dy9 outsourcing even more teams perhaps

@dy9 What are the odds of them using the YE reviews as a layoff meeting? Catch staff off guard.

@dy9 Another possibility is that leadership will either talk about layoffs that have happened recently or will be happening…I’ve been a part of the former

@dj1 Is anyone concerned about this 30 minute "Town Hall" on Thursday? I thought regular town halls were longer. 30 minutes seem short. I know people had mentioned with the earlier layoffs they liked to announce them on Thursdays. I know a lot of people in Tech are getting their YE reviews this week, and then there is that. The other rumor was that layoffs would happen again after YE reviews like they did a couple of years back in November. I'm trying to stay positive, but this has all been super stressful. I was actually looking into gig jobs like Door Dash in case I am next. Good luck all.

@e6 Has this happened in the OM OFFICE yet?

@e6 the service desk is a cross functional team and they handle a lot of DBA work for all the platforms.

@e2 The DBAs are NOT included in the Sept exit - maybe later, but not now. They are not training replacements. Only the command center, service desk, and helpdesk. I just spoke to one of them. Apparently Tier 1 is first and then they will go from there. DBAs could go when the mainframe folks go. I am guessing that by next summer they will have all be replaced by Filipinos.

@ah The DBAs are part of the September 12 exits to offshore in the Philippines. So, 75 people from BH down are part of that. I currently provide production support for legacy systems so I’ll be surprised if I am still employed as of January 1, 2026.

@OP If I google "what IT roles are most commonly offshored" I get back software developers, IT Support (Helpdesk), Cybersecurity, Web Development, Network Administration, Data Entry, Mobile App Development, IT Service Desk, Database Administration, and QA among others. The Helpdesk/Service Desk is already going. I heard that once the mainframe stuff is migrated off somewhere the people currently maintaining it will go. Some developers on app teams have been let go already. I would hope they pause and see how the first batch of offshored roles go before going all in but am all but certain that won't happen.

While I always see BS like "offshoring offers access to the best talent", it is common that the people doing the jobs are forced to train the offshore replacements or forfeit severance. When I started here I didn't get training; I had to jump in the fire. I hear they are pushing hard to get rid of old legacy databases and move most of what is left to the cloud. So I think DBAs will end up like the mainframe people, the question is when.

Apparently the people in charge of IT here basically did this at their last company - come in, outsource most of IT roles, brag about the cost savings and enjoy a nice year end bonus, and then moved on. Offshoring is not without issues or risks however. You are basically handing your company secrets over to foreigners you do not directly control. Given the thing with the Orioles seems to have no panned out, and the awful way these layoffs are happening, I expect it to be no different with this.
