Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Exxon jobs

What is it like to work at Exxon? I often read discussions mentioning PIP, NILs, and similar topics. While I’m interested in pursuing a career with Exxon, I’m concerned about the possibility of a toxic work culture. Feedback seems to be very polarized—some employees speak highly of their experience, while others are very critical

@qw You first.

Getting paid good money to do little/no work is a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. The only real annoyance is all of the washed-up geezers who won’t stop whining about everything constantly. The rest of the job is pretty easy.

It is a horrible place and getting worse by the day. Run away and do not look back.

@h3 You forgot the part where your compensation “stagnates” above a quarter-million dollars per year while owning two homes in addition to collecting both an EM pension and social security. Not bad for turning on a laptop and logging into a Zoom call a few times per day if you ask me.

It is fine when you are young but as you age it changes. The opportunities dry up and your ranking tanks. As a result your compensation stagnates. Raises become less than inflation and the possibility of being fired via PIP becomes a constant threat. Even if you were ranked high as a young employee. Even if you had a sponsor. If you come here to work the best time to leave is right after your 401k match vests.

Imagine working for a company with tools from the 90s, that can barely stand your presence, and makes it difficult to do anything. That's what it's like.

@OP Easy paycheck.

There isn’t much more to working for any large operating company besides showing up and opening your laptop.

People are so mediocre and the bar is so low that any moderately innovative thing that you do (like writing a macro) is treated like an earth-shaking discovery.

The only downside is that you’ll be surrounded by good ol’ boys who do less than nothing all day and complain constantly while drawing paychecks well into the $300k range. Just ignore them and do your job. Easy peasy.

I like it. Cutting edge work. Great colleagues.

I think ymmv. Obviously going to have a selection bias of ppl on this site. I do notice I think it’s older people who have golden handcuffs and feel like they can’t leave but resent I guess the declining rankings or being pushed out.
