Wicked Problems

Good morning readers let’s learn something interesting through a mental stretch as a fun start to our day!

Wicked problems defy solutions, because they're simply too complex.

In Cynefin terms, they're complex: they can only be managed through agile, iterative processes.

Indeed, sometimes the solution becomes part of the problem, or has implications in another part of the system that you didn't expect.

This is called life. Because while we like to think simple and we think data=data… reality is complex. Data can be dubious. Devious ahh.

There is a subset of wicked problems that are called ‘super wicked problems’.

They have the following characteristics:

  • Time is running out.
  • There is either no, or a weak, central authority to address the problem
  • Those who caused the problem are also seeking a solution
  • "Hyperbolic discounting occurs that pushes responses irrationally into the future".

Anyone here might have a wicked or ‘super wicked problem’?

Run your internal culture change campaign the same way professionals run behavior change campaigns. Make sure senior people are seen to care about this stuff. Think of like matrix of cybsec on startups, try not be sidetracked by what seems cool at the moment. Instead, focus on your actual attack surface. If you go for quick wins the dopamine will hit, no bueno

As has been said in this forum many times, data is the hub of Ford's future Model e mobility business. Data, is the key to data revenue, subscriptions revenue, services revenue, and host of other revenue streams. Don't be afraid of it or the future.

Bill Ford replacing the CEO and entire leadership tree

  • the company’s future is in peril
  • the entire FnF leadership tree is week and self serving
  • Bill Ford caused the problem, with series of bad leadership decisions i.e. Hackett, Farley
  • keeps kicking the can down the road, has been heard to say “I wish the Ford leadership would not behave that way” but nothing changes

In Ford terms a wicked compounding problem, in real world terms a competent leader would fire the CEO, a good chunk of the BOD, and most of the leadership tree.

To place the witch in the west is to the detriment of many, but solving requires more plastic than watermelon.

Funny how the ones holding the wrench are the ones who welded the leak in the first place.

What do you mean? I thought life was simple. Data data data. Like 1+1=2 and thus if this happens then that always happens. Like everything fits in a box. As expected. That’s why we judge others based on a system. One size fits all
