Mike Brady was a great architect, except for that time he lost his design plans at King's Island.

@gx
Chapter leads only receive inputs from scrum master when there's actual evidence of coasting.

Scrums masters honestly give lot of opportunities for improvement, if things don't work out then chapter leads are involved.

Scrum masters are responsible for delivery, chapter leads are responsible for code quality, technical nitty gritty.

@gh, what do you think the chapter leader's job is? Being more technical than you and appreciating the nuanced context around a story better than you, you think she can't spot and performance managing a coasting developer?

When AI starts making jobs redundant, the architect role should be the first to go. I’ll run things by AI, then I’ll run the same idea past an architect, and the AI always produces a clearly superior idea.

People don’t like the architects because they are literally the stupidist people on Earth.

The devs who hate scrum masters are the ones prefer "coasting", carrying same stories sprint after sprint with no details or comments.

They are the ones who will be in hot waters if audit hits your team and there's no scrum master to explain compliance why this issue / story has been carrying.

Scrum masters are responsible to accurately handle capacity, if the teams can't deliver all stories in sprint it reflects bad on scrum masters for poor planning and overloading the sprint, which in most cases is done in consultation with developers who are themselves not aware of how much they can accomplish.

So in a nutshell, you have devs complaining who can't accurately predict their own work and are targeting they don't need scrum masters, quite the irony

All I know is for the same budget, if I can, I'll take two developers in exchange for the architect that's aligned to us and the scrum master that's "driving" us.

@cw why are you angry? Are you one of those developers that doesn't like the transparency that agile should bring? Are you mad because you're expected to communicate and can't hide behind your keyboard while listening to sports radio? Don't like being painted with a broad brush? Well neither do the competent talented people who are in these roles you profess to be useless. And the fact that you refer to the scrum master that can be replaced with agile coach who is going to deal with 12 squads as 'she' is very telling indeed. Typical misogynist BS. The scrum master is not a secretary, my friend. If you were paying attention instead of whining maybe you can understand better the value that some of these people provide. And btw - when AI is used to replace all software engineers I won't be feeling sorry for someone that has your cr-ppy attitude

Anyone who believes or thinks a certain role, position or a group of people is unnecessary, redundant should ask themselves a simple question.

Is it just a hatred you have for these roles, people? Or is it your own inability to compete for these roles and step up and take additional responsibility?

If you were at a seed funded or series A start up, you'll not see any scrum master or middle management, and the result? The entire culture is chaos because developers, tech lead are unable to drive product forward due to lack of domain knowledge or even skills required.

As these companies they add these roles.

There's a reason why if you compare any start up with Fido or similar corporate, you'll notice one pattern common "stability and structure".

Fidelity sustained stability and structure by having right individuals for the right roles.

I suggest take some growth training yourself before throwing individual groups, roles under the bus to defend your lack of skills from taking additional responsibilities.

There are always people bullsh-tting around in any role and any org, but the few roles discussed here (architects, middle managers, scrum masters, folks from certain part of the world) are problematic structurally at Fidelity:

  • Excessive architects and middle management reflects Fidelity upper management's disbelief that engineering teams can be independently self-sustained without baby-sitting.
  • Excessive scrum masters reflects Fidelity upper management's lack of "frugal" mentality. Sure less work for me when we have a full-time employee talking care of menial things such as daily standup, but I wouldn't do that if Fidelity is my family business.
  • Excessive representation from certain part of the world. I honestly don't get it how it came about?!*&? Maybe as one commenter put it "one third of the cost with three-times more of a-s kissing".

@dg

Brother chill. I get it, they may come across bad at times but remember they're human beings with mortgages, kids in college, elderly parents to support, and their own anxieties and insecurities about their future.

Live and let live. And I promise you, the more you think positively toward situations, even annoying ones, the greater you will profit.

For those who're in the unneeded roles, yes you know you're, are there any uneasy feeling bringing home the paycheck without making the commensurate contributions? If you're goofing around appearing busy all day without actually contributing, how's that different from stealing from Fidelity?

I slack myself but at least I'm committing code to Github and I'm helping customers who use the code I write. I just can't stand watching the thieves around me appearing superior and authoritative over me. That's it.

Do we need that high paid, tall white dude who has the corner office and always looks busy and is in all these zoom meetings but who has no actual deliverables?

Yes, of course, because of DEI.

Do we need security personnel?

They just stand / sit at entrance pretty much possibly looking intimidating as if they're TSA.

Plus we can't enter without badging anyways.

After all they do is pick our trash and throw it somewhere else, we can transport our trash.

Quit being whiny dude, get a life. Be happy you're in a situation other people can only dream, then you'll be at peace

@cw

As the post just before you highlighted, everyone has a role in an ecosystem of economy.

You're entitled to believe scrum masters are not necessary.

There will be a group above you who thinks the same about you, would you say it'll be fair then to have your role eliminated coz someone else thought it's BS?

@cm, your Freudian analysis of me crying this and that role not needed are laughable. Insecure? Nah. Angry vent? Yes.

Thank you for reminding me another role Fid doesn't need:

  • Scrum masters. Let anybody on the team conduct the daily scrum ceremonies. Keep at most one agile coach for every dozen or so squads so she can help set up Jira boards, schedule/organize sprint-wise ceremonies. Watching them justifying their existence bushiing this and that theories is a painfull experience.

Let me inform you of a little "secret."

It's actually not really a secret.

We don't "need" the vast, vast majority of jobs in the world. Look up the book "Bullsh-t Jobs: A Theory" by anthropologist David Graeber.

Let's say everyone who had a bullsh-t job got fired --- and that would probably include 85% of the Fidelity workforce.

What happens then to people who work jobs that seemingly are not bullsh-t?

The farmers who grow the food. The surgeons who cut the cancer out of your diseased body. The plumber who makes sure the sh-t you put into the toilet doesn't overflow into your house. Suddenly they too face a big problem because most of their clients work bullsh-t jobs.

The economy depends on the circulation of money, and its through bullsh-t jobs and make-believe stories we make up about the importance of those jobs that we both circulate money and make people feel good about themselves.

We're not too different than the little kiddos in the kindergarten playing in their little toy houses and making up make believe stories to keep themselves occupied.

And once you accept that, I think you'll live a bit less of a stressed life. All the world is a stage and play.

People who make "do we need this role, that role" posts should go through therapy.

Your insecurity is what making you think apart from you, everyone's redundant and unnecessary.

Classic example of narcissist who thinks they're better than everyone else in the firm.

If you indeed were better, you'd actually be in that position / role you're complaining about instead of making insecure posts about it

Any time I see posts like this I think it has to be coming from someone so insecure with their role or position that they think they have to go on the attack of folks in a specific position. Why? Why do you feel you can’t follow the conversation that they’re making? Why would fidelity just have a fully unnecessary role? It’s a thinly veiled attempt for you to push for someone you don’t like to be forced out. Last year it was scrum masters. Now it’s architects? Come on. You’re fishing.

Also, Fidelity doesn't need any fund managers. The data is clear over decades, that a simple low cost S&P 500 index fund wins nearly every time over these other overpaid and under delivering 'expert' fund managers.

No. It's such a foregone conclusion on here that I don't want to bother elaborating why.

If the posts here are any approximation of the Fid associates sentiments:

  • Fid doesn't need that many architects
  • Fid doesn't need that many middle managements
  • Fid tech can't have that much representation from the biggest democracy of the world

Let's see how the upcoming layoff reflects above glaring obviousness. If not, "the tables would be flipped!"
