Thread regarding L3Harris Technologies layoffs

Is it okay to not give 2 weeks?

Wondering if i can just say hey, I’m leaving and tomorrow is my last day lol. I’d like to have a break in between jobs and frankly, I deserve it.

How would you feel if i did that? Also, any negatives besides maybe not having a good end with the company?

In Florida, employees are not legally required to give two weeks' notice before quitting their job, as the state follows an at-will employment policy. However, providing notice is often considered a professional courtesy that can help maintain positive relationships with employers

Make sure to take a week or two of vacation before giving your notice. If you’re a direct charge employee, you don’t accrue vacation and won’t get paid out any unused hours for the year. Maybe be sick for a week too before giving the notice. Though, as others mentioned, if the defense world is “small”, those managers will remember. Hah.

I gave two weeks notice when leaving L3Harris in Melbourne because I wanted the pay. If notice wasn’t given no one would care anyway.

@ht

Most of other big defense contractors don’t behave like this and see you preemptively as a “security risk” just because you put in a notice.
If you start trying to take work to your new job, they have measures to detect. But it’s not a blanket “oh he resigned and put in notice, he’s a risk now, cut him off”.

L3Harris is toxic from the top and does not trust its employees, including its management.

Also, they do not give you “notice” when deciding to terminate you.

@ht Not true. At least not in Clifton. Former colleagues of mine gave notice only to be walked out THAT DAY . Their benefits stopped at midnight and so did their pay, leaving them uninsured and without pay for those 2 weeks. The leadership in Clifton is a vindictive and spiteful entity. I don't know how other locations treat departing employees but Clifton treats them like traitors. Even going away parties; are forbidden on company property. One Melbourne appointed director even told us: " We will not celebrate disloyalty. If someone wants to leave, let them. But they're not getting freaking party."
Two weeks notice is for su-kers.

@OP I have been in this business for 40+ years. There is space and defense world is fairly small. The leadership that you burn today by just walking out with no notice could be that same leadership that someday makes it to the next company you’re with. I have seen that happen more times than I can count and a short-lived satisfaction of just walking out of the company ends up coming back to bite you in the @ss.
The best thing to do is give a two week notice, do the slow glide for those two weeks, and then take some time off at the end of the two weeks. Typically they will not let you work the full final two weeks because you’re a security risk and they’re afraid that you’ll start downloading information out of their systems or put a back door Trojan in etc. Most of the time they will give you that final two weeks of pay and send you on your way early.

Sometimes it's better to burn that bridge so you don't go back to a dysfunctional company during a moment of weakness. Besides, your new employer will not care if you gave notice to a Shyt company like L3HARRIS.

If you don't give any heads up to your direct team, they will suffer much more than the "company".

Have you heard of the golden rule? Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. I have watched what they have done to my coworkers time and time again and there was no two week notice when they were let go. Based on following the golden rule, no, you do not have to give a two week notice.

In this case, the bridge back to L3HARRIS is worth burning.
Courtesy?
Consider the way they have treated their employees. They didn't even extend the courtesy of a reach-around while they sc--wed them .

It is interesting as the company will not give you a days notice when ending your employment but it is expected that an employee give several weeks notice to allow a transition when they voluntarily leave. I view the two week notice as more of a courtesy to your coworkers who are going to shoulder the burden of your work until a permanent backfill is found. Yes you will burn bridges if you leave without giving at least two weeks notice.

I never try to put myself into a position where I burn a bridge. I personally always put in a two weeks notice, because people remember, even if it's just individual people.

But other than bridge burning and leaving a bad taste in people's mouths, no negatives, lol.
