Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Tech companies that will take our engineers

I've seen posts mentioning xom folks successfully leaving for tech companies (i.e. apple, aws). however, i havent had any luck even receiving a call back. which specific roles are you or your peers competitive for?

EMIT => send them to Burger King. The worst ones are those who took a half day long online course at certain university and then calling themselves graduate from that University even though they graduated from TTU.

total garbage and frauds

I'm in early career EMIT and the vast majority of us won't make it to any big well known tech company immediately. That's not to say it's impossible but you'll have to start at a smaller company then continue moving up. Only the relatively new grads that still have concepts fresh in their head/work ethic can probably go XOM > big tech.

The funny thing is my friends who started at smaller no name companies out of college are probably better suited for those tech companies than I am, but they are still in "awe" at having EM on the resume despite what I tell them.

Engineers should also consider non-eng positions at tech, they can still pay a lot.

@enb what was your role at xom and what is it now?

I got a job with AWS after XOM.
I did not get a job with AWS because of XOM.
As a matter of fact, XOM made me dumber and lazy. I even said that in my AWS interview. That XOM was not a place for anyone who cares about knowledge.

I was an experienced hire who converted from contractor. Once I became FTE I became lazy and much less technical. I started asking the contractors to do the work while I managed.

I decided it was time for me to leave. And it looks like I made the right decision.
99% of XOM employees who have never had any other job will have a hard time finding a career if XOM ever cuts the cord.

Go ahead and downvote this if you want. You know it’s the truth :)

@ixt+18qdlWos don’t worry, the big tech companies aren’t going to hire narrow minded, credential-focused people like you.

I keep laughing seeing people (many not even in EMIT) who have done a couple month data analysis role thinking they are now ready to lead a data group at a tech company. Totally delusional. A couple of LinkedIn classes and a boot camp don’t make you anywhere close to competitive. If you need to retool start at a small company and accept the reality of a significant pay cut. You are starting from square one with less than a BS and internship experience. Consider getting an MS degree of you are serious.

There’s a feature on LinkedIn where you can search for people’s current and previous companies. Hopefully you find someone you know (there are quite a few though mostly from EMIT) that has moved to one of those companies and you can ask them directly.
