Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

This company has ruined my life

I stuck by the motto of always just being happy that I had a job that paid decent. With excellent benefits. 2 years away from that sabbatical..

The stress. Is. Ki-ling. Me.

Mentally. It’s imparing me. Physically as well. My husband and I are trying to start a family and I have a feeling that won’t be possible if this stress continues. Despite being a high performer (exceeds expectations) on my review, waking up at 4-5AM to coordinate with my fellow Scrum/QA people in India, and stay on a little later to work with folks in cali and Seattle. Why do I feel like I’m still expendable. My entire team has worked on items related to each TG.

I lose sleep over this place. I snap on my husband easily. Granted we work similar hours it’s like I never see him.

I’ve been in EAP for almost a year now. That itself should have been a bad sign. My boss says that “he loves the work I do and is beyond greatful” all the time. Yet goes to his boss with the d-mbest complaints ever. Zero trust.

I saw someone post and get flames for “asking to be layed off” - is that actually a thing? There’s some things on Reddit about it and random web links. I don’t know what to trust.

If I have a job next week, do I just tell my manager that if they are looking for people to voluntarily leave and be part of all this- I can do it?

I need a break in my career. For my sake. For my families sake.

I would recommend coordinating with people in India between the hours of 7AM-11PM (This does depend on your timezone obviously.) Having good documentation and laying out procedures that they can follow during their working hours will help and you can then coordinate sometime around the above mentioned hours on whatever you need.

OP please seek help. No job or company should get in the way of your wellbeing, health and relationships. Stress is a part of life but this sounds more serious than typical work stress.

OP, please speak with your doctor about short term disability due to mental health. You are legally entitled to step away from work if your doc agrees it is impacting your health. There is a form your doc fills out and then you work with HR to take the leave. Please take care of yourself.

LAID is the past tense of the verb “to lay” which usually means “to set something down”, while LAYED is an archaic word that nobody uses anymore

I’m fairly sure that at this point a layoff would be my best option given the severance. Good luck all :)

Remember your priorities and set healthy boundaries. Your priority should be your family and mental well-being. That's where your loyalty should should be. If your job is causing you to mentally break down, reconsider a new role or company. To leave is not a sign of weakness or failure, but necessary steps to reprioritize what's important. The dedication you've put into work, should be the type of investment you should be making towards your family. Also, know the layoff is not personal.

I've been through other company layoffs and if you've never been through one, here's what I've learned:

  1. The outcome afterwards always resulted in landing a better position / place than what I had.
  1. In occasions where the position I found myself after layoff was not ideal, it was short-lived - but a necessary stepping-stone until better opportunity.
  1. There is whole new life after layoff.

I've not met anyone who left the company who didn't share the same experiences. The stress is the unknown, but pray and let go to God.

I’m sorry but this is absurd. If you think Schwab is hard, then I strongly advise you to not look at literally any other financial services company. This is about as easy as it gets.

@nnk+1nORyIq7 Schwab has HR business partners but that’s like an MD and above resource. The rest of us have to submit a HR tickets for everything.

Does each Line of business have a designated HR person? If so how do I find out who I would speak to.

Take care of yourself and stop worrying about a corporation. The company won't remember you 3 years from now, much less 30 years from now. Enjoy your life, don't sacrifice it.

On October 1

  • open laptop 7:59am
  • close laptop 5:01pm

Do not work outside those hours, your mental health should improve immensely. Good luck to the scrum/QA teams in India contacting you, that is not your problem, that is EC's problem to solve.
