Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

When did Schwab become this toxic?

Ten years ago when I left for a position that offered more pay it was still a good place to work with good culture and work environment. I recently returned having mostly positive memories of this place and I can't wrap my head around how much things have changed. The working environment is hostile and competitive and most of the employees seem miserable. When did this happen and what did I get myself into?

There are a bunch of 20+ year employees that do jack squat, and know they can do jack squat, without consequence.

All that will be left when April/May rolls around is the army of useless project managers, poser “architects” and fake engineers in STS. Must be such an interesting time right now as everyone worth a damn has been interviewing the last few weeks. How is anything getting accomplished????

Regarding this post: "Tim Heier is one of the most innovative, strategic, technologist we ever met." Nope, bull, wrong. You can have structure & governance and still be nimble. That's what TDA was...WAS! Past tense. I've already moved on to a bigger FinTech w/ less, yes LESS, governance that Schwab. You can't say Heier and innovative in the same sente...

@2bco+1eZ7TIqx probably depends on the org. I’m not sure about 40-50%. On the managers all-hands last year, it was like 13% YTD 2021 for STS. That was before things really started to ramp up. What they call “regrettable attrition” is really bad too. When a SME leaves and all their experience and knowledge about how things work around here goes with them.

With all the time and money they’re spending on “succession planning” efforts, you’d think they could just spend some of that money to make this company a more a appealing place to work. All we do is spend hundreds and millions of dollars to treat the symptoms, never to fix the root problem. You can thank leadership for that.

Remember. Toxic is what toxic does. Don't try. Do. Or do not. Use the Schwab. Become one with the Schwab. Let it flow through you.

I would love to see where the attrition stats came from, and if that was green, blue, both.

Who cares what a Senior Manager says. If you're not a Director, and you don't have to be a Managing Director of that steak sauce variety, then you are essentially a nobody in STS. Crawl back in your ho-e Senior Manager.

Tim Heier is one of the most innovative, strategic, technologist we ever met. Period. End of story. A lot of folks don't like it because of the controls that are in place. They don't like guard rails, no matter puts them up. They like it like it was the 1800s, wild west, frontier, do anything you want. That is a fundamental difference between TDA and Schwab. Schwab used to be like that years ago. But Tim put an end to all that. Place some structure, where structure was due, and removed barriers where the barriers did not make sense.

I understand this is hard. Some of you feel Tim is like Trump. Some of you fell Tim is like Biden. At the end of the day, you ain't gonna make everyone happy. I'll you this. Go work for Musk. Ain't gonna be greener pastures, I'll tell you that now.

I notice people are miserable here? Why?

This board amplifies the extreme values of some, and is not representative of the entire firm. This analogous to following the extreme right (Margerie Taylor) or the extreme right (AOC), and making a statement that that is what the majority of America is like. The majority of us in center, moderate, leaning left or right, but generally doesn't let that define us.

I’m in STS. Schwab will remain toxic while Heier, Dennis and rest of leadership crew all go.

Not going to happen so might as well leave for better opportunities. Word is already out on the street of how bad it is here so attracting the correct talent will be a challenge. Already experienced this with the questions coming from candidates about culture and offer refusals.

@ksx+1eZ7TIqx Very few of my coworkers are happy, and I only know one that monitors this forum. The sentiment here is very representative of what is happening at Schwab right now.

With the attrition rate we are experiencing I would say it is representative. I think attrition is between 40-50% over the last 2 years, that is pretty high and an indication of something. Feel free to spin it however you wish.

You are reading a forum where most people are posting here because they aren’t happy. It’s selection bias and not a true representation of how all employees feel.
