Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Verizon 4th Quarter Surplus Declaration

Verizon has declared a surplus condition in twenty-eight (28) titles within Force Adjustment Areas ("FAAs") 1 through 6 and Involuntary Transfer Area ("ITA") 5. The surplus titles and numbers can be found here. To alleviate the surplus condition, the Company will invoke the Force Adjustment Plan (FAP) of the collective bargaining agreement. This surplus condition has been determined by the Company to be due to a process change. The provisions of the respective FAP Articles 8(b) and 10 will not apply in this case.

If the surplus condition requires the use of the Enhanced Income Protection Plan (EIPP) under step three (3) of the FAP Article, EIPP offers will be tendered to those employees in the surplus titles and FAAs/Unit involved by November 3, 2020. An employees election to leave the service of the Company and receive EIPP payments must be in writing and transmitted to the Company within 15 days of the offer, in this case November 17, 2020. The off-payroll date for employees who accept the offer will be December 6, 2020.

A poster making up lies, everyone that has a college degree knows this to be true, you don't teach at the uni you graded from. The other poster is correct. I have a MSEE and my Alma Mater was very clear about this! The fact is I don't know a single person with a under or post grad that got a job with their Alma Mater teaching or doing research. People that don't have college degree are clueless to the scholastic world. My advice to the poster I am responding to, stop spreading lies and false information.

"The fact of the matter is it's unheard of, extremely rare that a University will hire a post grade to teach at the University that graduated from"

"That is untrue. Four people my son graduated with taught at the same university after graduation.

People that stay with a company for 30 years are really stupid. For starters there is no intellectual growth if you are with a company that long. Those 30 year people have been doing the same 1 or two jobs for 30 years because they can't do any other job, mostly because they are intellectual challenged. Smart people work for different companies, learn new things, build upon their intellect and become a more valuable member of a workforce because they know more. Long time workers at the same company are stagnant and become harder to train, to learn new things and less effective. Average scientist works for an University or lab no longer than 12 years. These are people with PhD's by the way and even they understand, MOVE ON! The fact of the matter is it's unheard of, extremely rare that a University will hire a post grade to teach at the University that graduated from, for the reasons I just explained.

So laugh all you want old timer, it's just shows you are not very smart.

The text below is exactly the attitude I was describing in my post from Saturday. This is a young tech who can’t see past his own stupidity. You may be able to run circles around the older techs, and I’m happy for you. That just proves to the company that you can do more with less. I hope your life gets easier when we leave, because you will be doing all this work on straight time, well done for you. They haven’t hired anyone new In this area I’m in for 20 years, so you’re the one that has to pick up the work I won’t be here to do. And if you don’t see that the company has plans to get rid of your younger a– by not hiring, your not looking at the world around you. Good luck, god bless. I hope you can claim a 30 year career like us “old timers”
“ Speak for yourself old timer! With a BSEE I have to constantly oversee the old timers because they can't keep up with the new tech that is being deployed these days. You people can't even provision a Cisco router from scratch, it's pathetic. I have to always jump in and do it for you all. Us younger types with degrees and CNA's are running circles around you all. My advice, just retire, leave! Make my job easier and get out so we can hire people that know what they are doing with modern networks.”

In 2008 youngbloods in the financial industry who either had no idea of why traditional conservative banking regulations were in place, or were driven by their greed, or by the impetuousness of youth, or just didn't care, overplayed risk causing the total implosion of the economy.
What banks faired well? The small local ones which still had 60, 70, 80 year olds at their helm, and were guided by sound historical financial foundational wisdom in their portfolios.
Young people are great for new, fresh ideas. Older people are great for traditional wisdom, gleaned from years of experience, that averts disaster.
A good mix of both is the ideal recipe for success.
Diversity categories also includes age, but many forget that.

There is some toxic remarks in this post about the “dead wood “. How the younger ones are carrying us. We have done our time, we have given to this company so that those who think they are carrying us are really just riding our coat tails. Remember the thoughts from those who came before me, the more work you do, the more they will give you. You are just a mule for the management. And as you work your way out of the little crumbs of overtime, realize the company doesn’t give 2 sh–s about letting anyone go. It’s a little thing called a contract that slows them down, making them go through a process before they layoff young guys. So be the company mule. Keep giving until you can’t give any more. When they lay people off because it’s what Wall Street wants, or they say you are not keeping up with their fake numbers, you can look in the mirror and realize you are now the dead wood you are calling us. Best of luck to those who will get my bundle of work.

For those of you that I am leaving behind, I wish you luck. I used to be a brash young man and do more work than the rest. Then I saw that the low producers were being sat down because their age was catching them. Now I am on the other side of the table, and my body is breaking down, and I am sat down for productivity, because the younger people don’t understand that their running around from job to job makes someone look bad. Rather than try to keep up with younger people that make the job harder every day, I would rather leave and get paid not to have to go to a miserable job, garage or manager that is not going to get better. Best of luck to those I leave behind, and hope there’s a company to retire from for those who think they know better.

1uha- talked to a few, went with 10-15 associates. Very happy with their service, very happy with their performance. Absolutely detailed and personal. My wife is a CFO, and knows $, and she gives them two thumbs up.
We looked at several larger firms, there was little comparison. We felt the larger firms are more detached from their clients, cookie cutter portfolios. . Also looked at another smaller firm I won’t name since a friend went with them. Truthfully they were dishonest in their presentation, my wife caught them. Love that woman .
Don’t take my word! As you pointed out, it pays to shop around and really talk to these people. Do your research and Best of luck!

I left last year, with 29 years. I was a little nervous about it.
Used a great financial firm, and have made more money in the past year than I would’ve working. During a pandemic no less!
Try arguing against that.
This job may not be as essential as it was when you were young.
Consider carefully, but don’t let fear of the unknown be your driving force.

I am so happy to see you go, we NEED the deadwood to leave the company. It's just makes it better for all of us productive workers that have to keep covering for your type. Please take the package and leave, I beg you! And to all others, just take the pack and get out. You all called Verizon "Toxic" Well you are either an id–t for willing working for a "Toxic" company or you are a fool, both I suppose. So leave and we will be thankful that we don't have to cover for deadwood anymore!

I'm out. I used to love this job. For the "if you don't like it, quit and move on folks", I have too much invested to leave. I loved this job until 7 years ago. I'm beat up, I hurt. I'm being asked to the job of a 20 or 30 year old and yah i've put in tons of SPV's to a COT job. None ever came through. The phenomely low interest rates, my age.. I talked to numerous Financial Planners, there is no better time for me to go than now. I'll never be rich, but well enough off to persue other interests and not worry about dropping dead a day after retirement. I wish all, the best.

If they just did a 3&3 across the board along with a better incentive, they would reduce the payroll by half, IMO.. so I will stay, need 6 more years ..

Verizon should extend the offer to more areas so people that want to leave can and the people that don’t want to can stay.

2023 seems to be when the heard thins out, unless a package like a 3&3 along with some decent money comes out, it’s going to be like this every year. On another note, why don’t they just extend the home garaging till the spring of 2021, then re-evaluate ? This 30 day extension stuff is just silly.... Nov 30th now....

In NYC they might get number. Most people that work in Manhattan/NYC, that take public transportation to work, are sick/worried about pandemic and will jump at any offer. A bunch of people I know are taking this one. My year is 2023.
