Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Those laid off are the lucky ones

We're already expected to take on more work since we have fewer people around. At least the laid off folks got paid to look for other employment. All we get is more work for the same pay. I'm not trying to minimize what happened to those who were cut, but from my perspective, I think they dodged a bullet.

You are absolutely minimizing what is happening to the people that is being laid-off. Once you have experienced it perhaps you will understand. Let's list out the impacts: Physiological √, Lifestyle √, Major life event √ ,Organizational stressors √ , Financial √, Social stressors √ and Environmental stressors √ . I hope that you are coming back to read this thread and apologize.

Agree with @pyf+1q2PsxxW
If you’ve worked at other brands in our industry you will know how cake the Nike life is. Low accountability, low output and comparatively good pay (especially in good years).
Be careful what you wish for.
Also Nike employees are not sought after for the same reasons listed above.

I think if you wish to be laid off, you need to setup a 15 minute meeting with your leader and beg them to lay you off.

Echoing the other comments in this thread - the original post is so tone-deaf that I have to wonder if it's meant to troll everyone lol. Been laid off more than once and it's stressful every time. The panic of finding a job before severance runs out + limited/no health insurance for my kids + the crushing shame of "why me, what could I have done better" etc is really rough.

Working at Nike is by no means perfect - it's not even great imo - but it's a decent job with decent benefits and an excellent resume builder. @OP: if you truly think those laid off are lucky, please do us all a favor and contact your HRBP immediately to volunteer to be laid off. There are dozens of qualified applicants with a better attitude who'd be thrilled to take your place.

As someone who has worked for multiple brands in this industry you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Most brands expect more work for less pay. Be careful what you wish for.

Wow... you are seriously clueless or in some warped bubble.

Saying you think those who were laid off were lucky? You have no idea of the impact.

Yes, there is the financial aspect (don’t say “well, they got severance.” Can they find a new job before the severance runs out?)

You have no idea how that impacts the family, especially with medical ....

You have no idea how this impacts a person mentally.

Think before you speak.

I’d happily take the extra work to have kept my job. LMK when you quit so I can apply to your role

typically shallow and a sign of what's wrong with Nike.
Empathy - it's not selected for and severely lacking at Nike.

@lfq exactly right. Being laid off is not a good thing. Also, I loved my job and what I do. For someone who can’t move now but was moved here by Nike the panic of both employment here and career path being limited is very real.

Not only that, is saying we are paid to look for employment completely incorrect, we lose on tenured benefits like time off, and stock which is a huge financial hit for some of us.

OP I’d happily trade if you like?

You are minimizing what happened to those who got laid off and may still get laid off. These people have rent or mortgages to pay, student loans to pay, other bills to pay. They may have tuition to pay. You don’t know the panic of “will I find a job before severance runs out” or “will I need to deplete my savings before I can find a job.” What if the person laid off works in a role such as design or product creation? There aren’t many of those types on jobs in Oregon. They may need to pack up and move to find a job. Imaging uprooting your family. The person laid off may even be the one person in their family earning income. You must not know that feeling. I do. My family has gone through this before so I have compassion for those that are laid off. If you hate being here so much, if you think the grass is greener, you are free to leave and make room for someone who does want to work here or someone who needs to work here. Nike isn’t perfect but it’s a job. It may be hard for those laid off to find another job in this economy especially when they don’t have a job already. Imaging trying to apply for an open position anywhere and against the other people in Nike and from other recently laid off employees from wherever. It’s hard.

Start looking for a new job and do the bare minimum in the meantime. This isn’t that hard.

You can literally look for another job.
This is a bad take.
