Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

WFH or RTO. Stop worrying. Its simple what will happen.

Realistically. Both sides have pros and cons.

Remote people are going to have to be exceptional at very visible and proactive work, or they will look like they are missing and it will stand out fast. A lot of people are good at this. But they will have a disadvantage of visibility and knowledge access.

Office people are going to have to make up daily lost time and productivity drains they will have by default. They start every day behind. They will have an advantage in access to resources, but at a cost in time and microtasking. Guarantee they will be taking work home to get some work done.

Both are going to coexist and do really exceptional things. But its up to the person how they work and if they are right for it.

If anyone thinks that informally staff who are good at their job and loyal to Dell are going to be passed over for someone who turns up to the office but cant do their job, they arent getting it.

This is a very smart move. Click that remote button and prove you can do it or hit the office button and be in some faces.

"No one has said that if you tick the remote button you cant develop your career"

They literally say it will endanger your advancements within the company. Da---t you people are dense or have poor comprehensions skills.

Believe them when they tell you what they are!

@1dzz+1qUmeSmW this is a good point you raise but.

No one has said that if you tick the remote button you cant develop your career. No one has said you will never be promoted. It simply (as far as the leaked document says) says that you may need to opt to be Hybrid should you look for a promotion (EG, another role).

Just because you are remote you arent excluded. You arent excluded now why would you be in a weeks time?

I was hired as remote 10years ago, my team are global and there’s only a few of us in my region … what is the point of me travelling nearly 2hrs to go to the office and sit on my own. It’s a waste of my time and my productivity.
I want to further develop my career so am stuck … 3 days in the office or leave Dell (which doesn’t sound like such a bad option after all the negative changes I’ve seen).
This is just creating additional anxiety and stress for a workforce that has been continually asked to “do more with less” … we deserve to be treated better than this!

"If you are upset about the office not having the decor you want then look around you. Thats what has happened to every company. "

you are so out of touch it's not even funny.
Let me guess: another 25y veteran/dinosaur of dell trying to give a pull yourself up by yer bootstraps pep talk?

I personally remote work and do a fantastic job at it. I also have proven my value over ten years plus and dont have any fear that someone else up the chain doesnt see that.

And Im going to opt for remote because I back myself that the business knows what we do and how effective it is. If I wanted a promotion which I dont then would have that discussion with my manager. In case anyone hasnt noticed promotions are a multi year thing here anyway.

If I go to the office I wont be as effective. My choice.

The problem isnt me. The problem is the other hires that are new and havent had the same exposure we have. They didnt do what we did when we started out in the industry and shlep into the office at the crack of dawn to get facetime with people. They did it online since day one and it is not the same.

If you are upset about the office not having the decor you want then look around you. Thats what has happened to every company. The office is not your bedroom anymore. You dont get your own cubicle to put up pictures of the family and keep a snack box in the drawer. We are fortunate to have what we have.

Does anyone remember how when you started in the industry you had to catch transport for hours each way and be there at 8 in the morning or you were fired? But you learned a lot by doing that and kept coming back. Seriously are we now that entitled that we forgot how hard we worked to get here? This is not about you.

Opt for remote if you want to be remote.
Opt for hybrid if you dont.

Either way just do a really good job, treat others well and everything else wont matter.

Im not from HR. Not everyone who has an opinion and cares about the company is from HR.

@dxt+1qUmeSmW What's it matter if they zero the votes. I think everyone knows how most people feel, mad about the policy. Plus if they really 'compromised' the site, they wouldn't bother zero'ing comments out. They'd just flat remove them or put them in the red

Some of the posts here have been zeroed out and new posts supporting the new changes are popping up. This site is compromised and possibly owned or selling data directly to

They literally tell you remote will come with career penalties. And this was after watered down HR and lawyer speak.

Believe them when they announce who and what they are. Not some rosy glasses BS you think you see in-between the lines.

The office/cube you remember is no longer there. It's actually a floor with dilapidated cubes and cheap office furniture configured for mass sharing. You will need to fight for resources from the outset.

Even the most basic amenities are gone now. Have ergo problems? Desk too high or low? Too bad. Sanitized? No. All staff have been downsized or removed from janitorial to maintenance. Pathogens will be rampant so will the next flu/virus.

Yea - “the play smart but win” tactics are being played out here which is Michael Dell passive aggressive pathetic style.

It is a big deal. With all of the low growth poor strategic direction, lack of revenue and major layoffs, is return to office with terrible policies really the inspiring thing Dell needs right now?

This is classic Stockholm Syndrome.

People like you are the scourge of society. Bad enough you falter and trip with your own ideology and ill thought beliefs; but you willingly subject and volunteer others around you to it as well.

You claim this is a “smart move” but I don’t see any explanation of that at all - just some white washing over generalization of working from home vs working in an office, when the leaked details clearly state Remote is being punished.

What are you smoking? I’ve seen people “not connecting and learning” in office for years before Covid. What “resources” in office are you even talking about?

You know who I feel sorry for? The managers. They are going to have to police this. They will be pushed to manage people who arent right for the role but have flown under the radar, as others will not be able to carry them anymore.

@nyz+1qUmeSmW The problem isnt you. dont take it personally and think it is. The problem is the small number of people that are not connecting or learning and when we were in the office, that role did.

Just sign up for remote. Things will change many times in the next few years!

I’ve been proving it for 10 years, and Dell is clearly stating my career here is done and I’m first preference for layoffs. You do whatever mental gymnastics you want, I’ve spent all weekend on my resume.
