the voluntary package is cheaper than the long term cost of the UI tax to Cisco. This is why they're doing it — that and it looks better on them if you leave voluntarily.
@ogs+17obVHez but if my job has been declared "at-risk" and there is no other role for me, how can i stay on as a cisco employee? even if it declined the package, cisco can "fire" me using the LR.

Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that this is not a layoff...yet. All that has happened is a large number of people being told their job is "at risk". Because of that, they are being offered a package to voluntarily quit. I think the legal wording of it has been looked at it great deal so Cisco would not have to pay unemployment for those that take it. From what I have read and seen this is a personal choice with a potential that there could be a layoff in December.
I know it is more legal-speak than anything, but Cisco is trying to look good in it by offering a lucrative package. Someone else will need to say if after 6 months you can apply for unemployment. My guess is no because they are not forcing anyone to leave. It is voluntary like quitting a job.
