Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Where is the disconnect coming from?

I noticed a huge disconnect between what is posted on this board versus other sites such as Glassdoor and Indeed reviews section. I have been following this board for a while and it has been very active with a lot of negative things to say about Intel. However, when I read the review section on Glassdoor or Indeed, it is the total opposite. People leave really good reviews about Intel saying how much they have learned and well treated. I noticed the same thing from people on LinkedIn, they say good things about Intel. Which source is more trustworthy? Do these sites attract different subcultures from Intel? Don't tell me the positive reviews on Glassdoor and Indeed are all coming from the HR because that doesn't make sense. I am just trying to understand where the discrepancy is coming from, no need for angry responses.

Much of what you read here is true or at least more true than what you'll read on Glassdoor or certainly Linkedin.

The way that people have survived at Intel isn't through technical acumen, market knowledge or candor but from being really good at working at Intel, navigating the political games and being lucky enough to have a boss who protected them.

People at Intel are either stuck with golden handcuffs - too well paid, institutionalized to Intel and lacking transferable technical skills to go elsewhere - or happy to be cogs in a wheel and go along to get along and enjoy your free piece of fruit and soda per day.

The people on this board I'd assume are some of the golden handcuff crowd screaming (the truth that they can't utter at work) into the void and others (like me) who are still trying to make sense of my time at Intel and just how and why Intel is such a weird, broken, toxic goat rodeo that was at one time "the most powerful company in the world" but today cannot accomplish anything (beyond lobbying for more money from Uncle Sugar).

@1qde - There's a sexist, bigoted and racist strand to Intel that comes from certain groups of third-worlders. Skilled and competitive engineers, esp. female but also male, will get yelled at and backstabbed by inept and incompetent non-technical managers that feel threatened by their engineers' superior knowledge. Within a few years, most of the real technical females end up leaving Intel. Those that remain have learned to play the back-stabbing, self-promoting, and racist clique game themselves.

I would challenge the poster here. When you go to this site for AMD or Nvidia or TSMC there have been no posts for months. Think about that. This has to be like the most active forum on this site.

I wasn't laid off. I left when I found other employment. During the layoffs in 2016, people who were not selected for a package were volunteering and asking if they could get a package. Intel is toxic, especially for women. They operate in an antiquated culture. I worked with a lot of smart people at Intel, but it is management and the nepotistic practices that keep it toxic. HR is out of touch with the real culture at Intel. I was yelled at and bullied daily, but by HR standards it was business as usual.

A lot of those people are basically trapped, at least 10+ or 15+ years in the company sometimes without any previous jobs. Clearly any valuable knowledge or experience that could be useful at other companies is long gone, as basically all they know is how to survive at Intel. At this point they hate the work environment, culture and morale but they are just cruising until they can finally retire or get pushed out.

@qhd - Agreed. Easily 70%-80% of the comments on Glassdoor are interns/RCGs from India, Malaysia, Mexico, Costra Rica, etc who will basically work for peanuts.

@nvb You can stay anonymous when leaving bad reviews. I assume most engineers are internet savvy.

HR "recommends" all interns to leave positive feedback at Glassdoor, Linkedin, Indeed, etc. If it is not given, the candidate is not offered full time job or continued internships.

1 reason. Intel will take you to court if you leave really bad feedback and it’s in your paperwork if you leave.
That’s why you see Glassdoor as not as bad as you think. This site is more less rumor mill or opinions you can’t say on glass door. There in about 90% on here is the truth though.

On top of what @ori has said, this group seems to attract those people who hate Intel, but decide to continue to work there. I wonder if motivation is to encourage others to leave so they get promotion by attrition. I don't understand why people stick around if they hate the company, their management and work so much.
