Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

What's the point of middle management?

Is there any reason why they can't be cut out entirely?

So, the CEO is supposed to manage everyone directly? Technically everyone in between is a manager.

Without middle management, any performance issues would be slow to be addressed, issues would be shoved further into a blackhole and never addressed causing more customer impacts. Nobody would be able to dig into the weeds enough to understand processes to identify gaps or necessary change. Nobody would get information about performance goals because middle management are the ones important in developing them. You'd never know how you are doing, or how your department is doing. Higher management is about the bottom line not the people who do the work. But not all areas need middle management depending on their responsibilities. But for some areas it is a necessity.

@ozi+1gMGGvQw I am glad he does not get 181K, or I'd be really pi---d.

@ozi+1gMGGvQw Amen. Nothing screams "development doesn't really matter" (under the guise of own-your-own-development, of course) or "remind me what you did, because I haven't a clue" (under the guise of own-your-own-development, of course) than write-your-own-review time.

I always think of that meme for middle managers, "you had one job..."

Truthfully, it works the same way at most corporate entities, but Wells seems so much better at it, pretending it's all part of a non-existent development program or that individuals are best served by writing their own reviews. So lazy

We could certainly do without my immediate manager. All he does is performance reviews a couple of times a year. And he doesn’t really do that. He just instructs his direct reports to write self reviews in third person, and uploads them verbatim. The only feedback he ever gives is “write more”. That’s it. That’s what he does. For that he gets $180,000/year. And Wells Fargo is crawling with people like him.

  1. There quantitatively isn't a point
  1. No

Middle managers provide two vital roles. First, they deliver the corporate message to team leaders. Second, they prevent any negative feedback from those who understand the implications of the corporate message from getting back to upper management. In other words, they are professional yes men (and women).

Purely to have a larger rigid structure in place (more money for the top).

Middle Managers typically do all the work that their lazy, online shopping, DEI time wasting bosses take credit for.

While there are (rare) exceptions the answer is "no". Middle managers aren't allowed to manage. They are primarily in place to do the grunt work of performance reviews, discipline, salary adjustments, etc. all at the direction of a more senior manager who doesn't want to be that deep in the weeds.

Depends on the middle manager. My current boss has done both my job and the job of the TMs we support, so he’s a good resource and actually knows what’s up. Someone in the same roll with less relevant experience might not be much help though.

No—-this place is full of glorified babysitters that have no real work output. Most of them have been here for 15/20+ years in the same role. They protect one another and the bank is too cheap to give them a package. My team once had a 2 VPs rolling up to a Director, rolling up to another Director, rolling up to another one…well you get the point. Could have gotten rid of 3 of the 4 and the team wouldn’t have missed a beat.

Idk we haven’t had a manager in months. Haven’t noticed much of a difference. Haven’t needed anyone really either.

Someone needs to dutifully read the layoff script to the department heads. Then they can leave.

I'd rather see dotted lines go away.

You're either a manager or you're not.
