Going forward, what are some of the best industries or sectors to look for jobs and career options?

@Rcve very few EMIT folks with real tech skills anymore. Many started out in tech roles only to get promoted into cushy "advisor" roles, product owners, product managers, etc...their tech skills are as useful as tits on a boar hog. Those are the jobs XOM needs to eliminate if they want to save the comapny....leave the tech guys , who do the real work, alone.
@2oqv Last year google received over 3 million resumes and hired 30,000 (1% hire rate), so yeah I’ll stick with 99% not able to crack FAANGM.
@1pgf 99% is an overstatement but certainly there’s a lot of people in EMIT at all levels that are in for a rude awakening if they ever find themselves having to look elsewhere. However there are many talented people that can, and have left for top companies in all industries including Big Tech.
Idk what you mean by “xom processes” but I came from another company and you’ll deal with similar processes every where you go. Some it’s even worse.
@idcj 99% of EMIT isn’t getting FAANGM. I’m Former EMIT and let me tell you, being good at XOM processes isn’t a skill set.
@1yuh sounds like someone hasn’t kept up with their own skills over the last decade. Can’t blame the company for that. As mentioned below, just look for people that previously worked at EM to see where they have ended up. FAANG features prominently in that list as do MBB consultancies.
@ubv+16OrRcve/@1yuh+16OrRcve - I know a lot of people that have left for FAANGM in past 2 years alone, as another poster said the Linkedin data is out there. Besides not like FAANG is the only worthy tech companies. Twilio, Bytedance, Salesforce, Snap, VMWare, etc all are good choices.

ExxonMobil IT more than 10 years means you're 8 years behind.
About as Agile as a wounded water buffalo.
But it's all fads in IT anyhow - you can fake it.
On the other hand - 'Chemical' Science/Engineering fields (outside of 'Petrochem') are easily transferable. Ops Research - any Quantifying sciences - all good.
On the low-down - if you've been a Supervisor/Manager a few years.
When you take the 'PiL' this quarter or next:
You won't get the feeble Right Management job-hunting service offered to Ops/PT personnel.
They'll send your resume straight to Corrections Corporation of America (CCA).
They are the only match.
Emit folks for the most part aren’t going to get hired by FAANG (or microsoft)
I went from XOM to healthcare back in 2000. Now I am a Director of Engineering at a large, urban hospital. I can work at any hospital in the country, making $200K in Ca.

@paq - false. It’s very easy to go on LinkedIn and see “current company” and “previous company”. Also salaries are not as high as you claim until they reach very senior positions or very high cost of living locations like Bay Area.
Its unlikely any that one could have got a job with FAANG company would have chosen xom in the last 5-10 years. Those companies starting salaries are 200k+. With about 5 years experience you probably pulling in 300-400. XOM doesn't pay that.
@ovv+16OrRcve, I was never a bu** kisser, so I didn't make 6-figures. Looking back, maybe I should have played their game. But I just couldn't.
There are many other positions admins can transition to. If you’ve a degree there’s still a ton of Executive Admin positions.
@qzs good executive assistants are still sought after as office managers, etc. They won’t make the $100k++ Exxon senior admin salary but are far from unemployable
Plenty of people leaving EMIT for Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, etc. these days
I found work in consumer products and I'm voluntarily leaving soon, pay isn't too much lower and I'm moving away from the gulf coast
What su**s for some being laid off, admins are a dying breed. And after being at EM for 25 years, I've lost a lot of my skills I had before going there. Who's going to want to hire a 50-something year old secretary?
Although everyone is hurting now, for engineers, food, pharma, consumer product goods not a bad bet. Lower pay but more civilized locations and better working environments.
If you have the mind set for it Data Science is in demand all over and you can do an accelerated program in a year or less depending on your existing qualifications.
22 years at EM so far in IT. My skills are not based and limited to the oil industry. Having a degree or skill set that is solely defined for oil industry is a huge mistake. My IT skills are needed in every industry.
