The only reason? No, I find that difficult to believe. It sounds like you all got lazy with IT department and told them to priortize company logo over functionality. Should have gone with someone like Super Micro.
Also, the world wouldn't have stopped. What do you think the tech industry was doing before the mid 80s? Michael Dell was probably sitting on the john when he came up with his business idea. "I'm going to make the same hardware that everyone else has made!" he exclaimed while flushing the toilet.
(20 years later) "Now I'm going to outsource R&D and engineering talent to cheaper and worse talent in Asia because I want to save money. We'll ignore all of the unethical labor laws in China as they make our products. Now THAT'S the Dell plan for success."
