Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Single people vs families

I can understand why people with kids are so upset about being laid off, but what I can’t understand is why people who are single with no kids are so scared.

If your single with no kids, you can work retail, deliver pizzas, drive for Uber, exc until something better comes along.

Just remember, it’s not the end of the world

Let’s not forget those of us with tenure are not kids. We have some disabilities. We have limitations. We are not carefree twenty-somethings. People who are ignorant of compassion generally receive what they dish out ten fold. OP will be no exception. I do not generalize people based on age, race, marital status, or anything else. It’s wrong to judge, and use such a large brush. To generalize your anger. I can only imagine that you are feeling the bitter reality that is Allstate. Please reach up and out and refuse to accept their behavior. Rise above and do not repeat the mistake of spending your time on a company that does not value you in return.

The OP is probably a troll. Besides which, if a parent finds themselves strapped for cash due to a job loss, then shame on the parent for starting a family without 1) considering the consequences and 2) planning for contingencies.

No one is above having to go deliver pizzas if you need to make supplementary income just do it and keep quiet if you need to. Big deal there’s no shame in getting extra jobs. However many snobs think they are above those kind of things. You do what you need to do to take care of your family

Crazy! I swear, sometimes I think people with kids are so selfish. I've had to pick up the slack for coworkers with kids as they stay home with sick kids, leave early to pick up kids from daycare, who can't travel for work because of the kids, and that somehow it is implied that someone like me should just pick up this extra slack automatically because I don't have any kids.

I'm also very sick of hearing or seeing people's little b–tards in the background while people work from home. Just because you have kids doesn't mean you should get extra perks at work.

@sna+17dBSvE1 you are making 2200 a month after taxes? and paying 1100 a month for a 1 bedroom? go out there and get a better job, you deserve it! I don't know what state you are in but you can move to find a better job, go somewhere that might be fun to move to.

I don't agree with the OP's reasons but a single person has a little more flexibility and you should take advantage of it.

We can all do better.

It’s great when people think that singles have no bills, no medical problems, no rent.

Anyone that has kids in America gets what they deserve. No safety net at all. You'd have to be crazy to do that.

The cost of insurance, pr-scrip-ions and dental is going to be pretty expensive. I don’t think being single means you don’t have bills. You still have rent, car insurance (hopefully no longer Allstate) and so many other living expenses even being single.

Living alone, owning a home (mortgage), car payment, running a house/ paying for issues like plumbing, flooding, food, insurance, additional living expenses. Medical bills and pr-scrip-ions and school loans... just had to pay over 3000.00 to have trees cut down in my back yard that were over grown... I pay for all on one salary. Sometimes I wonder why single people are called out for being better off financially.

You are mistaken and ignorant in your thought process and the fact you would post this makes me more angry than facing a lay-off in the first place.

But, since I could blow of some steam- let me just lay it out for you-

  1. As a single, I do not and will not qualify for any financial assistance in the event of a lay-off- in fact, I was just glancing through my mail and came across an electric statement. I opened it to pay ($200 for the month because I have a home built in the 1910’s and though beautiful, it’s a bear to pay utilities) I noticed the “Need Help? See if You Qualify for Assistance”. So I figured I would look at it- I laughed out loud. Hideous laugh. As a single person working full time- I could only receive assistance (special payment plan) if I made less than 16,400 a year. I made that working part time in college. It’s a joke. BUT for a family of 3 it went up to 35,000 and then an additional 5,000 per child! And knowing plenty of families who one spouse stays at home, that would almost guarantee help for you if you are laid off.
  1. I also will not be able to get temporary assistance in the form of food stamps or other government programs. Again, even though I live pay check to pay check being single and owning a home and making ends meet- because I didn’t have a child and make more than 20,000/yr I have to starve too. But I have friends who are able to buy loads of food with two working spouses because they STILL qualify for stamps.
  1. Insurance. Singles won’t get Medicaid ina situation where income is nothing. Families can qualify for Medicaid when they have children. Even if it’s just discounted- it’s not Cobra.
  1. Families may still have one working spouse in the event of you getting laid off. You cut down on expenses and budget and find a new job. Oh, and childcare is free because you aren’t working. Me, last time I checked- bills keep coming in, I made too much in 2019 and I can’t make my dog go find a job- sooooo I guess I’ll just do what I have to and go work at McDonald’s and make it work.

There are so many resources for families. In most states. And for good reason, no child should EVER be in need of food or clothing or anything. I believe in helping families that are in temporary financial crisis.

That being said, to say singles shouldn’t be worried is an uneducated assumption. I worry every day- every single day. I make cuts where I can, gave up little things I find joy in buying for now, and I keep my resume updated. I chose to buy my own home to hopefully one day have a family in. But, in order for me to live in a neighborhood full of cute little families- it takes 90 percent of my income and I budget every. Single. Cent. So, think twice before assuming we singles have it easy.

I wasn't laid off, but you're kidding right?

My rent is $1,100/month for a one bed room.
My light bill is roughly $100.00/month.
Food is around $200.00/month.
My student loans are $400.00 a month. Yes, I'm choosing to pay even while deferred.
I have other miscellaneous charges that usually add up to around ~$400.00/month

I'm not making $2,200.00 a month after taxes delivering pizzas, driving for Uber or working for minimum wage.

You sound incredibly dumb, OP.

Ok, when I left one insurance company and before I got hired at Allstate I did part time at FedEx. It was part time loading the trucks. I busted my a– at that job, I was still in my 20s and could handle it though

Then I got my first paycheck for 2 weeks, after taxes it was $150

I applied for insurance claims jobs again the next day

Thats all and well if your original salary/income was comparable to pizza delivery/warehouse job salary...You can work that type of job temorarily....But if your income was considerably higher you most likely had a lifestyle and bills to match that....then working a low income job wont pay your bills...

People with kids can also deliver pizzas and drive for Uber, that has nothing to do with being single 💀

Even though the pay at Allstate compared to other giants in the industry wasn’t great, it’s still what pays our bills. Family or single, acknowledge this is hard for everyone and extend some compassion, yeah?

The correction should be, If you are single and have your home and car paid off, then Ya, you can just go ahead and go work a warehouse job or something. That's my plan at least for the next time I get laid off from my high paying High stress job.

You have to be one of the most obtuse piles of garbage ever to be on this board. So because I am single and laid off from my six figure professional position that I should just go deliver pizzas? Eat sh!t you arrogant punk!
